Sharapova has struggled through into the final eight term at the $721,000 Stanford event when the Russian beat Daniela Hantuchova in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The Russian, who is chasing her second title of the season in California, will next meet either Serena Williams or Maria Kirilenko.
The former world number one broke her opponent five times after creating nine opportunities and saved eight from 12 chances. Despite she committed 11 double faults, Sharapova managed to stay in the match thanks to an impressive service. The Russian finished the game winning 57 percent of service points and 46 on return, compared to her opponent who had won 54 percent of service points and 43 on return.
Sharapova, winner of this term’s Rime Masters and finalist at the French Open and who has been favored by a BYE in the first term, will next meet the winner between another former world leader Serena Williams and Maria Kirilenko. The American blanked Anastasia Rodionova 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, while Kirilenko follows a 6-2, 6-3 defeat against this term’s Stuttgart event winner Julia Gorges.
Williams broke Rodionova six times not allowing her opponent to create any break point chance throughout the entire meeting. She impressed by winning 83 percent of service points and 65 percent on return, something which helped her to prevail in nearly one hour. Her next opponent Kirilenko grabbed six breaks from Julia winning 67 percent of service points.
Dominika Cibulkova has also reached the quarter final when the Slovak edged Christina McHale 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 after breaking the American four times of nine tries. Dominika dominated the game especially through her service points, finishing the meeting with a 63 percent of service points won and with a 42 percent of return points. Her opponent had a better first serve percentage of 46, but her return was very poor, winning just 37 percent of the points.
Said Cibulkova: “I wasn’t playing my best today and it’s not easy to win matches like that. From 2-3 in the third set I played more aggressively and was able to win. I was lucky to win, but to win when you’re not playing well gives you even more confidence and can help when you go and play your next matches.”
Next up for her will be either Victoria Azarenka, a defending champion in Stanford, or Marina Erakovic who eased past Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-1. Third seed Marion Bartoli, who had been favored by BYE in the opening term, beat Canadian Rebecca Marino in two sets 6-4, 6-3 to prevail in one hour and a half. The French created ten break point chances and converted four of them, while Marino could only convert one of her four opportunities.
Fifth favorite Agnieszka Radwanksa, who had ousted Baroba Strycova Zahlavova 6-1, 6-2 in the first term, had some hard times against Taipei Kai Chen Chang whom the Polish edged after surviving a second set scare 6-4, 3-6, 6-0, needing one hour and a half to get rid of the stubborn opponent against whom she managed though to keep the sheet clean in the decider.
Next up for Radwanksa will be the winner between Samantha Stosur, who has been favored by a BYE in the first term, and Sabine Lisicki, winner of this year’s Birmingham event, who follows a 6-1, 6-2 win over Simona Halep of Romania. The German won five breaks against Halep who could only create two break point chances and convert one, winning at the same time 65 percent of service points.
Finally, Urszula Radwanksa stunned Olga Savchuk of Ukraine 6-4, 6-2 in the first round to set an Ayumi Morita meeting. The qualifier picked five breaks from the Ukrainian against whom she won 62 percent of service points. Her next opponent Morita has provided the biggest surprise of the week when the Japanese ousted former world number one Ana Ivanovic in two sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Morita converted all her seven break point opportunities and managed to save three other from the opposite side. The Serb committed nine double faults, allowing Morita to set a 54 percent of return points. The Japanese is now in front of her best performance of the season, though she is expected to have some hard times against Radwanska.
