New York have grabbed their second straight 12-4 win over the Central leaders after overcoming a 3-4 deficit in the third term. Yankees have also picked their sixth win in the past ten meetings, but remain second in the East.
Despite a slow start, the hosts managed to dispel the two-point deficit they had been subjected early in the first inning to score their last eight points in a row. Kinsler scored the first point for the Rangers after Hamilton singled to left in the first round, while Andrus doubled the lead right afterwards from Young’s double. Yankees’ first reply came in the same term through Teixeira who hit a 400-foot homerun, while Granderson leveled the score immediately.
The second term saw Pena bring the first the lead for the home side after Granderson grounded out to third. Texas then grabbed back the lead, going 4-3 ahead of the Yankees thanks to Kinsler’s 415-foot homerun and Hamilton’s precious point. Unfortunately, that was the last time the visitors scored a point as New York would propel through to a late outstanding rally. Nunez replied with a 366-foot homerun to make it 4-4 in the fourth, while Rodriguez put his side one point ahead after Jones singled to left.
Even more than that, Jones himself scored his first point in the fifth after Cervelli singled to center. Things got much worse in the sixth when Pena and Teixeira hit two homeruns, one apiece as Yankees were heading towards a clear victory. Swisher made it 9-4 in the sixth as Rangers were still struggling for a late comeback. The seventh term went scoreless for both sides, while the eighth one saw the same hosts score three more points. Cano fired a 379-foot homerun, the sixth of the meeting, while Granderson and Teixeira closed out the game.
Said Cervelli: “If you think somebody’s going to hit you hard is when a lot bad things happen. In my mind just make the play no matter what happened.” Manager Joe Girardi looked delighted with his side’s victory, claiming that “just great at-bats.” On the other side, Rangers manager Ron Washington declared that “We need a well-pitched game, that’s what we need, whether it comes from a starter or the bullpen. We need somebody to go out there and pitch a good game so the offense has a chance to breathe a little bit.”
Yankees remain second in the East with a .576 season record which includes 38 wins and 28 losses. Texas are top spot in the West with 36 wins and 33 defeats, their recent performances allowed their main followers Seattle to go just one gameback behind them.
Washington Nationals 10 – 0 St. Louis Cardinals
Bottom Nationals have stunned the former Central leaders Cardinals last night at the Nationals Park, to extend their winning streak to five games. Morse brought the first lead in the second inning after hitting a 385-foot homerun. For the Cardinals, things started to go bad from the very beginning as the visitors wouldn’t be able to score at least once away in Washington. Werth doubled the lead in the third term after Zimmerman singled to center.
The fourth term found the sane Nationals scoring three more points. Rdoriguez singled to right, allowing Morse to score his second point of the night, while Espinosa made it 4-0 also thanks to an error committed by third baseman Pujols. Furthermore, Rodriguez scored the fifth point after Bernadina doubled to left. The fifth inning then went scoreless, but things looked clear as possible. Desmond singled to center and Rodriguez scored another point in the sixth. As for the seventh round, it saw Morse grab his second homerun and Nix make it 8-0.
Finally, Espinosa also fired a 419-foot homerun in the same inning, while Werth closed out the meeting with a fourth homerun in the eighth. Nationals thus grabbed a very important win, though they remain foot of the table in the East with 32 wins and 36 losses, the same as Florida Marlins. St. Louis, by contrast, failed to near the leading position, going one gameback behind Brewers with 38 victories and 31 defeats.
Houston Astros 3 – 7 Pittsburgh Pirates
Houston conceded their second straight win last night at the Minute Maid Park where they allowed the Pirates overcome a 2-3 deficit. Pittsburgh went 2-0 ahead of the home side in the first three innings, only to be left one point behind in the fifth. McCutchen scored the first point after Walker tripled to right, while Diaz doubled the lead after the same Walker singled to center in the third term. Astros stunned the visitors with a three-point trot, managing to take the lead in the fifth. First, Bourn cut the deficit to two points in the third, while Towles made it even 2-3 in the fourth. Johnson scored the only point of the next term after Barmes doubled to left, something which allowed the hosts to stay in touch with the victory.
But the unexpected was yet to come for the lively Houston. Pirates replied with a four-point rally they then converted into a clear win. Paul leveled the score in the sixth term, while Tabata and Jones followed him minutes later. Finally, Paul hit a 352-foot homerun in the seventh, while McKenry scored the last point of the clash as Pirates were celebrating their 19th away victory of the season.
Pittsburgh are fourth in the Central Conference with 34 wins and 33 losses, while Houston lie foot of the table with 25 wins and 44 defeats, the worst record of the league.
Chicago Cubs 5 – 9 Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee have taken advantage of Cardinals’ loss to cement their leading position in the Central with a 39th win. Brewers beat Cubs last night at the Wrigley Field after being led 1-0 until the fourth term. Baker opened the game hitting a homerun as Cubs threatened with a good day in Chicago and in front of a 40,000 warmly crowd. Unfortunately for the hosts, things were about to get complicated though as Brewers powered through to a five-point rally that proved to be crucial in the end. Braun leveled the score after Hart singled to right.
McGehee then brought the first lead for the visitors after Lucroy singled to left and Betancourt got to second. The next inning saw Brewers score three more points through Braun, Fielder and the same McGehee who made it 5-1 in the fifth term. Cubs replied with a 4-5 deficit after Johnson homered to left and both Zambrano and Castro threatened with a late comeback. Milwaukee broke back immediately through Braun and Fielder who took the pressure off their manager, making it 7-4 in the seventh round.
The eighth term brought two more points, one apiece, while Fielder gave the Brewers the long-awaited victory by scoring the last point of the night. Milwaukee are first with 39 wins and 30 losses, while Cubs are second from the bottom with only 27 wins and 40 defeats, the loss the Brewers being their sixth in the past ten games.
