Phillies have claimed their 43rd win of the season to improve their record to a .623 winning percentage, by far the best in the league. Philadelphia overcame Marlins 8-1 yesterday at the Citizens Bank Park after conceding an early point, to extend their streak to six straight victories.
Morrison opened the session with a 392-foot homerun, but the Marlins wouldn’t score any point until the end. As for the Phillies, they would stun the visitors with a eight-point early rally. Victorino broke back immediately after Howard doubled to right, while Francisco scored his first point in the second term when he also brought the first lead for the hosts, but after Rollins singled to right. The third inning saw Howard, Utley and Francisco score three more points for the home side for a 5-1 lead.
Finally, Rollins fired a 350-foot homerun within the same term, while Valdez and Sardinha followed him and closed the game after scoring the last couple of points of the meeting. Philadelphia have thus grabbed their sixth straight win of the season, 27th at home, sitting first in the East with 43 wins and 26 losses, the victory over Marlins being at the same time their eighth of the past ten games. Florida, by contrast, lie second from the bottom in the same conference with 32 wins and 36 defeats, the loss to Philadelphia being their sixth in a row, ninth in the past ten games. The two sides meet again on Thursday at the same Citizens Bank Park.
Said a disappointed Edwin Rodriguez, Marlins manager: “We need consistency on the mound, a starter that can keep us in the game. We haven’t showed much offensively so we’re putting a lot of pressure on the pitcher. Kendrick, who allowed four singles claimed that “everybody wants things to work out perfectly, but this game’s not like that.” Phillies’ boss Charlie Manuel praised Kendrick’s performance, saying that “he draws a lot of criticism at times, but he’s been a winner.”
Los Angeles Dodgers 2 – 7 Cincinnati Reds
Dodgers are getting from bad to worse as Los Angeles have lost their third straight game when they were stunned by Cincinnati yesterday at the Dodger Stadium. Despite a pretty slow start which saw the visitors concede an early point, the Reds managed to come from behind and score all their seven points in a row. Tahmes walked in the first inning, allowing Ethier to bring the first lead for the Dodgers, who would get into big trouble right afterwards.
Cincinnati hit their first two points in the second inning through Phillips and Rolen following to doubles hit by the same Rolen and Lewis respectively. The next term brought four more points for the favorites who started to draw the clear win very early. Rolen singled to left and Renteria made it 3-1, the two being followed by Votto’s first point scored from Lewis walk. Finally, Hanigan singled to left as Rolen and Gomes made it 6-1 within the same third term.
The fourth inning included just one point, scored by the same Reds who closed their session through Phillips. The next two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the seventh one saw Carroll bring the consolation for the Dodgers who lost their 19th home game in front of a 30,000 warmly crowd. Cincinnati are third in the Central with 37 wins and 33 losses, the victory over Los Angeles being their third in a row, seventh of the past ten games. Dodgers lie second from the bottom in the West with 31 wins and 39 losses, the yesterday defeat being their third in a row, seventh in the past ten meetings.
Detroit Tigers 4 – 6 Cleveland Indians
Detroit have missed a great opportunity to get the leading position in the Central Conference when they conceded a precious victory last night at the Comerica Park where the hosts could have overcome Cleveland in the standings. Indians managed to overcome and cut a three-point early deficit and grab their third win of the past ten games. Boesch brought the first lead for the Tigers, hitting a 408-foot homerun early in the first inning.
Avila then singled to center, allowing Cabrera and Martinez to put their side three points ahead. The next two innings went scoreless, but the Tigers remained the main favorites for the victory. Unfortunately, the Indians scored four points in a row only in the fourth term to take a 4-3 lead in a crucial moment. Cabrera scored the first point for the Indians after LaPorta singled to left early in the fourth, while Choo put his side one point behind. Marson then singled to right, allowing La Porta to make it 3-3. Finally, Sizemore sacrificed to center as Cabrera made it 4-3.
Detroit broke back immediately through Santiago who leveled the score after Boesch grounded out to second. The game was leading towards a very tight end, while Indians were pushing much harder. Thus, the fifth term saw Choo make it 5-4. The next one went dry for both sides, while the seventh inning brought the visitors a precious point. LaPorta grounded out to third, allowing Choo to bring the victory which keep Cleveland’s top spot chances alive.
Indians have gone .545 this season, which includes 36 wins and 30 losses, while their main followers Detroit sit just behind them with a .544 winning percentage which incorporates 37 wins and 31 defeats, the loss to Cleveland being their fourth in the past ten games.
Colorado Rockies 6 – 3 San Diego Padres
Colorado have managed to grab their second win over the Padres when they overcame San Diego last night at the Coors in front of a 35,000 warmly crowd. After the first four innings went scoreless, the fifth one saw the two sides score a couple of points. San Diego took the first lead through Johnson who hit a 418-foot homerun. Rockies broke back immediately through Morales who leveled the score after Gonzalez singled to center.
As for the sixth term, it found the hosts scoring five points in a row and taking a comfortable 6-1 lead. Smith singled to right, allowing Herrera to bring the first lead for his side, while Helton put the Rockies into a two-point advantage after Wigginton also singled to center. Smith then made things look pretty clear scoring the fourth point just minutes later. Finally, Wigginton and Blackmon scored the last couple of points. San Diego replied through Gonzalez who cu the deficit to four points and Forsythe who made it 3-6 in the last round.
