The two Philipps have set an all-German final at the 663,750-euro Halle Open after eliminating two of the main favorites. Kohlschreiber ousted Gael Monfils in straight sets, while Petzschner edged the main favorite Tomas Berdych in three sets.
World number 49 Kohlschreiber managed to grab a couple of precious breaks, beating Monfils 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour. The German, who will be chasing his third career title, has made his best performance at the Halle Open and will face his compatriot for the fourth time. On the other side, Petzschner had some hard times against the world number seven Berdych who could only push the opener into the breaker and win the second term to two.
The crowd favourite won the tie-break 9-7, only to concede the second set very easily 2-6. Berdych thus managed to push the meeting a decider, but things were about to get very complicated. Petzschner, the world number 71, stunned the Czech with an early break that helped him to preserve a two-game lead until the end. The 27-year-old has grabbed one of his more precious wins against a op ten ATP opponent and is to fight for his second career title.
“I kept my head above the water with a bit of luck. I only got a few chances and I used them without mercy. But I have to say, the match balanced on a knife’s edge. Of course I’m overjoyed that I won, but even if I had lost would have been proud of my performance,” said a delighted Petzschner who has picked his best performance of the season, as well.
En route to the final, Kohlschreiber has grabbed big wins against another favorite and defending champion Lleyton Hewitt whom he beat in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3 in the quarter final, and another one against tough Alexandr Dolgopolov whom the German ousted 6-3, 7-6 in the second term. The first round brought him a struggling victory against compatriot Cedrik Marcel Stebe who stole him the second set in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win.
On the other side, Petzschner has picked two straight-set wins in the first round and a very hard one against Milos Raonic in the quarter finals. The German ousted Dominik Meffert 6-2, 7-6 in the first day and Daniel Gimeno 6-2, 6-4 in the next one. Finally, the quarter final brought him a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 success over the Canadian.
The head to head series between the two Germans is led by Kohlschreiber who has defeated his countryman twice in the previous three meetings, his last victory dating from the 2010 Monte Carlo Masters. Petzschner, who is to meet the 27-year-old for the second time this year, beat him at the 2011 Dubai event in the last 16 round.
