New York thwarted Cleveland 11-7 on Friday night at the Yankee Stadium, but the former leaders remain behind the Red Sox who have just extended their winning streak to seven wins.
The Yankees had a much better start than the Central Conference leaders whom they hit the first six points in a row. Jeter brought the first lead of the night after Cano singled to right. Teixeira then doubled the advantage from Swisher sacrifice fly, while Rodriguez scored the last point of the first inning after Posada singled to center. The second term brought one more point for the home side who made it 3-0 through Granderson who hit a 402-foot homerun. Furthermore, Gardner doubled to right in the third, allowing Cano to put his side four points ahead and start drawing a clear win.
Rodriguez made it 6-0 to end the early session with a comfortable advantage. Indians’ first reply came in the fifth round through LaPorta who cut the deficit to five points after Brantley grounded into fielder’s choice to first. Santana fired a 412-foot homerun in the sixth but Cleveland were still far form threatening with a consistent comeback.
Granderson broke back immediately, making it 7-2 also thanks to a throwing error committed by catcher Santana. The seventh inning brought the home side three more precious points scored by Jeter, Granderson and Teixeira who made it 11-2. That was also the last time New York scored a point, the enxt two innings being dominated by Celveland who managed to cut the deficit to four points. Phelps walked in the eighth, while Sizemore scored their third point of the meeting.
The ninth inning found Brantley, Cabrera and Santana adding the last consolation points for the Indians. Yankees have improved their season record to .557, which includes 34 wins and 27 losses, while Cleveland have gone the same as New York, the loss to New York being their second in a row, seventh in the past ten games.
Said Rodriguez: “Forget who we’re playing, you can’t have teams be so comfortable against us. I thought tonight was a good way to answer back and answer the call because the last three games at home was very embarrassing for us and it’s really not acceptable for us to play that type of baseball.” The two sides meet again on Sunday at the same Yankee Stadium.
Houston Astros 4 – 11 Atlanta Braves
Atlanta have extended their winning streak to four wins after easing past bottom Astros on Friday at the Minute Maid Park where Houston were given no chance to take the lead. The visitors started the game with a five-point trot which included a couple of homeruns hit by Freeman and Gonzalez in the third inning. Schafer scored the first point of the meeting, while Uggla doubled the lead also thanks to a throwing error committed by baseman Wallace.
Astros’ first reply came in the same round through Bourn who cut the deficit to four points after Sanchez grounded out to third. Atlanta broke back in the fifth through the same Schafer who put his die back into a five-point advantage after Jones singled to left. Even more than that, Jones and Freeman extended the lead to seven points, while Gonzalez made it 9-1 after Young singled to center.
Houston could only cut their deficit at times, so Bourn scored the second point for the home side on Hudson’s wild pitch the sixth inning went scoreless, while the seventh and eighth ones showed Hinske and Jones hitting two homeruns for a 11-2 lead. Finally, the ninth term highlighted the Astros scoring their last couple of consolation points. Downs fired a 360-foot homerun, while Corporan closed out the game.
Atlanta have gone two gamesback behind leaders Philadelphia, having imrpved their seson record to .563 which includes 36 wins and 28 losses. Houston, by contrast, lie foot of the table in the Central part with 24 wins and 40 defeats.
Pittsburgh Pirates 1 – 8 New York Mets
Pittsburgh have conceded their second straight loss after being the Mets at the PNC Park on Friday. New York took an early lead, only to be leveled immediately by Tabata. The second and third innings went scoreless, while the fourth showed Mets powering through to a 6-1 lead. Duda singled to center, allowing Pagan to bring back the lead, being helped by a throwing error committed by fielder McCutchen.
Thole then singled to right, while Duda made it 3-1. Meanwhile, the Pirates were still struggling for a break through. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t be given the chance to cut the deficit as the Mets were heading towards a comprehensive win. Tejada and Gee propelled New York four points ahead, while Reyes made it even six after Beltran sacrificed to right. The fifth inning brought one more point for the away side, who made it 7-1 through Pagan. Finally, the sixth inning brought the last point of the meeting after Reyes fired a 380-foot homerun, giving his side the 16th away win.
New York remain second from the bottom in the East with 31 wins and 32 losses, the win over Pirates being also their sixth in the past ten games. On the other side, Pittsburgh are fourth in the Central Conference with 30 wins and 32 defeats. The two sides will meet again on Sunday at the same PNC Park.
