Boston have cemented their top spot with a comprehensive win over the former leaders when they stunned Yankees 8 – 3 last night at the Yankee stadium. Despite a poor start, Red Sox’s late rally helped them to open the gap in the East.
Granderson was the first to score a point in New York, bringing an early lead for the hosts in the first inning. The Yankee hit a 364-foot homerun as Jeter doubled the lead right afterwards. The next five innings went dry for both sides, but the seventh one showed the visitors scoring eight points in a row and stunning the former leaders with a great play they had provided even in their previous clash. Lowrie tripled to right and Ortiz cut the deficit to one point.
Then Cameron doubled to left and Lowrie leveled the score, while Red Sox were preparing for a powerful late comeback. Things got much worse for the Yankees who allowed their visitors to score five more points without scoring any. Ellsbury singled to right, permitting Cameron to bring Red Sox the first lead of the night. Varitek propelled his side two points ahead after Gonzalez singled to center, while Ellsbury got his first point minutes later. Finally, the same Gonzalez and Youkilis extended the advantage to five points as Yankees were still struggling for a break through.
The eighth inning went dry, but the final one found the two teams scoring two points, one apiece. Scutaro made it 8-2, while Gardner scored the last consolation point for the hosts after Jeter grounded out to shortstop.
