first free practice, Fernando Alonso managed to set the pace within the second one, coming first with a 1 minute and 37,968 time. The former world champion, who is still chasing his first title of the season, spent 35 laps on the track in the afternoon session, being followed by Lewis Hamilton who was 0,227 seconds slower than him.
Sebastian Vettel, who had come 16th in the first practice, set the third best time in the afternoon, coming just 0,297 seconds behind the Spaniard. The German spent 31 laps on the track, ten more than in the morning. Michael Schumacher impressed with a 0,347 second-gap, coming fourth, just ahead of Felipe Massa who was 0,475 slower than his team-mate. Jenson Button, winner at the Canadian Gran Prix, was sixth, while Mark Webber, who had come fastest in the first training, was behind him with a 0,563 second gap.
The next three positions have been taken by Nico Rosberg of Mercedes, who was the first to come beyond a one-second gap, and Renault’s Nick Heidfeld and Vitaly Petrov, who came second in the first session. Force India came 11th through Adrian Sutil, while Rubens Barrichello was 12th, just over two seconds slower than Alonso.
His team-mate Maldonado, who also spent 34 laps, came 2,333 seconds behind Alonso. Paulo di Resta, who drove just seven laps, set a 2,395-second gap, being 0,091 seconds faster than Toro Rosso’s Buemi. Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi set back-to-back positions, and so did Lotus’s Kovalainen and Trulli, who were 4,188 and 4,271 seconds slower than the leader.

Said team principal Eric Boullier: “Steve resigned, so I think it is just another step in maybe bringing some new ideas and to go for the next step where I want the team to be. For what I want to achieve with the team, John has a great experience of where I want his job to be. It is not about replacing a sporting director, it is more splitting responsibilities.”
Renault managed to grab a second position in the first practice at the European Grand Prix, but the second term brought them a poor performance. They are also looking for their first title of the year as neither Petrov, nor Heidfeld have been able to win a title this season. The Russian came instead third at the Aussie GP earlier this year, while Heidfeld first shined at the Malaysian Grand Prix when he grabbed the third position.
