Gian Piero Gasperini is to replace Leonardo on Inter bench after the Brazilian coach left the club earlier this month. The 53-year-old was a second option alongside Andre Villas Boas who finally signed Chelsea. Gasperini was sacked by Genoa for the poor results, though he managed to put the side tenth in the standings, 15 points behind an Europa League spot.
Gasperini, who has previously coached Juventus’s youth team and minnows Crotone, is expected to pen a two-year deal with the Italian Cup champions who finished the season second, six points behind arch-rivals and new champions AC Milan. “President Massimo Moratti, currently out of Italy, confirmed ‘his full satisfaction with the choice’ and, together with the entire club, wishes Gasperini ‘the success that brought Inter the title of world champions’,” the club statement read.
Leonardo left Inter after failing to defend the title and make superior phases in UEFA Champions League where they were ousted by Schalke in the quarter finals. They won instead the second straight Italian Cup after defeating Palemro 3-1 in the big final. The Brazilian had a 68 winning percentage with Inter whom he had joined this winter, which includes 22 wins, three draws and seven defeats.
On the other side, Gasperini’s last season with Genoa included 14 wins, nine draws and 15 losses. Inter will be the biggest challenge for the former Juventus player, who has no top-level experience as manager. The job will be the tougher the Nerrazzuri are keen to go back top in the standings, but also in the continental competitions.
Even more than that, this will be the harder to achieve a few rumors regarding some transfers have occurred this month. According to reports, Samuel Eto’o is likely to join Chelsea, though no offer has been made yet by the Blues. The Cameroonian top-scorer has also shown his interest in signing a Premier League side, but he refused to reveal any name he might join this summer.
Eto’o has scored the most points for Nerrazzuri this term,21, and also delivered the most decisive passes, nine. The 30-year-old finished the season as a third best scorer in Serie A, after Udinese’s Antonio di Natale and Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.
Wesley Sneijder had also been among the departing-list, but the Dutch pointed clearly he won’t be leaving the Italian side, though both Chelsea and Jose Mourinho looked interested to bring him on Bernabeu. Lucio is likely to stay two more yers on Giuseppe Meazza. “I want to remain at Inter but with the condition that my contract is extended until June 2014,” said the Brazilian defender who is likely to be given a one-year extension.
