Four journalists, three with the West Sumatera local media and one with Indonesian national media have been detained by the Police for allegedly blackmailing a businessman in Dharmasraya, West Sumatra.
West Sumatra Police spokesperson Adjunct Commissioner Agus B Kawedar confirmed that three journalists were detained on Friday (25/02/2011,) following the detention of another journalist last week. “There were four suspect in total arrested and cash evidence of USD 250 was seized” said Agus.
The businessman reportedly was asked for USD 2,500 after the journalists threatened to expose that his business were improperly licensed. The victim agreed to pay but then later found the courage to report the blackmail to the Police.
“Based on reports of the victim, we then conduct our investigation and found evidence that support the extortion story” said Agus.
The first suspect was nabbed including what was left of the blackmail money. After further investigation three more were nabbed one week after.
Padang Head of Press Advocacy, Roni Saputra said that the action by the police was acceptable. He said that what is alleged against the four journalists are criminal acts and are totally unacceptable to the journalism profession. “Press protection only valid if there are actions to deter, disrupt, and boycott the work of journalists. But criminal acts should be prosecuted” said Roni.
However, Roni suggested that the police also asked the Press Council for advice on the process so that the police can handle the case appropriately.
Roni said that cases like these were never exposed before because most of them were resolved through bribery. “Press Advocacy not only to report crime committed against journalist but also by journalist. So if there are people who feel mistreated, they could report it to us to be facilitated by the Press Council,” said Roni.
