The Australian nationals and also convicted drug trafficker Schapelle Leigh Corby and Renae Lawrence was given reduction of their jail time 1.5 months each. Corby and Renae are amongst the 7,324 inmates throughout Indonesia who obtain remission in Christmas 2010.
“Corby and Renae was proposed to get a remission in respect of Christmas and they meet all the requirements and proposal was granted,” said Siswanto Chief of Kerobokan Prison where the two are held
Corby was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Denpasar District Court in 2005 because she was found guilty of smuggling 4.2 kilograms of marijuana into Bali through Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport on October 8, 2004. Meanwhile, Renae was sentenced to 20 years in prison because she was found guilty of smuggling 8.6 kilograms of heroin to Bali on April 12, 2005.
In addition to two women from Australia, there are four other foreigners who also get Christmas remissions. Currently there are 19 prisoners of foreign citizens who are locked up at the largest prison in Bali.
Schapelle Leigh Corby who is also known as the Ganja Queen went to Bali in 2004 to visit her sister. She was latter arrested at the Ngurah Rai Bali airport with 4.2 kilograms of marijuana which she denied to have owned. The ordeal had mad here famous by having her story aired at HBO called The Hidden Truth. Corby prison sentence was also previously cut by three months as part of the Independence celebration back in 2008. She continues to protest her innocence in the case.
