Police Witnesses Deny Mubarak Gave the Order To Shoot At Protestors
Hosni Mubarak
The third session of the trial in which the former president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, is convicted of ordering the crackdown on the population protesting against his rule in January and February was resumed on Monday with a surprise that could constitute itself as a setback for the prosecutors, who want to see Mubarak sentenced.
During the 12-hour session of the trial, four high-ranking officers were brought to testify on the crackdown on January 25 and 28, the most important moment of the Egyptian revolution.
Among the police officers there was a general and two majors, who recanted previous statements made to prosecutors, and denied that former minister Adli or his aides gave the word for the police to use ammunition on protestors.
The testimony is paramount for prosecutor’s accusation, which is based on the fact that Mubarak ordered Adli to use weapons on people.
A lawyer representing 11 families of the people who were killed from January 25 to February 11 said he was not surprised because the officers still work in the police force and it is unlikely to have them turn in their former superiors.
General Moussa said that the automatic weapons were given only to the people who were protecting the ministry’s HQ, major Saied said that the orders he received were to use self-control when dealing with protestors and to treat them like brothers and sons, while captain Hassan said that there were no orders to shoot with live ammunition.
All these testimonies were deemed by Egyptian press as an embarrassment for the state, reminding that these were prosecution witnesses and were supposed to accuse Mubarak and the former interior minister.

Mubarak's Trial
There are additional reasons to think that the trial would be even harder because of defense lawyers, who represent the families of the 800 hundred people killed in the Egyptian revolution. The judge had to clear the court for 45 minutes because these people started shouting and fighting in the courtroom.
Mubarak’s trial is very important for the future of Egypt and the Arab world, being for the first time that a authoritarian leader in an Arab state is held accountable for his deeds.
The trial started with an embarrassing display, in which the president was presented in a cage to the entire world, being brought to the trial from the hospital, where he was being treated for heart problems.
The display immediately sparked different reactions, some people demanded that the former president be hanged, others protesting the fact that he is being humiliated this way.
When the second session of the trial started the judge ordered the cameras removed, so that the scandal in front of the Police Academy building, where the trial is being conducted, be toned down.
Mubarak is accused of crimes committed during Egyptian revolution, and if found guilty, he could be sentenced to death by hanging.
There are reports that before he stepped down, Mubarak cut a deal with the leaders of the military council that leads the country now. One provision of such deal was that he may not be humiliated in public by being displayed in a trial.
The army, however, seems to want to show the people that something has changed in the country, thus delivering Mubarak to be judged. They had little choice, considering that the people were adamant in demanding that he be tried.
