Hungarian GP: Vettel Grabs Pole, Alonso Fifth
Vettel sets yet another pole
“Yes baby, this is what I’m talking about!,” world champion Sebastian Vettel screamed at the end of the Hungaroring qualifying where the German set a one minute and 19,815 second best time for his seventh pole position of the season, 23rd of career.
This term’s Chinese and German Grand Prix champion Lewis Hamilton, who had set the best time in both the first and second free practices, came second, 0,163 seconds slower than the German who is chasing his seventh title of the season. Jenson Button, who hadn’t made a too good debut in Hungary, managed to grab the third position, putting McLaren among the main favorites for the Sunday race. The Briton was 0,209 second slower than Vettel, being followed by Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, who impressed in the qualifying with a fourth best time, and former world champion Fernando Alonso who set a 0,550 second gap against the German.
Vettel’s team-mate, Mark Webber, who had set the pole position in Germany last week, was sixth, 0,658 seconds behind the world leader. Nico Rosberg did a great job for Mercedes, coming 1,283 seconds behind Vettel, and 0,347 seconds faster than his follower Adrian Sutil of Force India. Former world champion and German’s team-mate Michael Schumacher was the first to set a two second gap, being followed by Sergio Perez of Sauber.
Paulo Di Resta came 11th with a 2,441 big gap, while Renault’s Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld failed to set remarkable times, coming 2,469 and 2,655 seconds behind the leader. Kamui Kobayashi came 13th, between the two Sauber drives, with a 2,620 second gap, while Williams’ Rubens Barrichello and Maldonado made yet another miserable qualifying, coming nearly three seconds slower than Vettel.
Alguersuari was between them and 16th with a 3,164 second delay, while his Toro Rosso Sebastian Buemi, who spent just nine laps on the track, was 4,255 seconds slower than the pole position. Finally, Lotus Heikki Kovalainen and Trulli wills tart the race on last positions.
Said Vettel: “We changed a lot on the car overnight and the boys were working very hard and didn’t get much sleep. This is the best way to say thank you.” Webber looked the more idssapointed he had set better times in the previous practices. “There’s no way I could do that lap time, no way. Yesterday it was nip and tuck but today there is a gap. We’ll have to look at it,” he who has picked two pole positions so far this season, said.
Fortunately, Webber remains second in the standings, but he will have to fight for his place tomorrow as Lewis Hamilton, who is just five points behind the Aussie, has plenty of chances to shine tomorrow in Budapest and thus climb second. Webber has not won any title so far this year, while Button and Alonso will be chasing their second ones.
