It is a well known fact that family history provides extremely good insight into chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart problems.
Up until now it was believed that family history could provide great insight into who is going to have strokes and who is not, but according to a new study, that goes better for heart attacks. The new British study suggests that genetics play a very important role in determining heart attacks. “A family history of heart attack appears to be a stronger risk factor for heart attack than a family history of stroke is for stroke,” said the author of the study, Amitava Banerjee. Given that genome-wide and genes association studies are not critical when it comes to the field of stroke research, doctors should keep in mind that genetics play a very important role, especially when it comes to a person’s risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Given that both heart attacks and strokes are among the most popular causes of death among the people in the United States of America, the British researchers decided to make a study on this and see what they can find out. Thus, they collected some data provided by the Oxford Vascular Study on 906 people who had suffered a heart attack and from 1,015 people who had suffered and survived a stroke. By comparison, the researchers found out that 30 percent of the people who had a heart attack had at least one of the parents who had also suffered such a thing and 21 percent had a sibling who had suffered one, while there were only 21 percent of the people who had a stroke who reported having a parent who had also had a stroke and only 8 percent reported having a sibling who had suffered one. According to the researchers the risks of stroke did not change much when reported to the family history. “Risk prediction models using family history currently lump a patient’s family history of stroke and heart attack together,” Banerjee said. Banerjee went on saying that the two things must be looked at and treated differently and separately from now on.
Even though genetics does not seem to play a very important role when it comes to predicting the risks of strokes, the family’s medical history is still very important overall. When a parent has a stroke, especially at a young age, people should definitely try and do something in order to protect themselves from such a thing in their future. However, even when the parent suffers a stroke, it does not necessarily mean that the kid will also go through a similar experience. Still, it would be safer just to keep an eye on things and check on your health status from once in a while, just to make sure that everything is just fine.
