Dalai Lama Says China Has No Saying On Successor
Dalai Lama
Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader on Saturday said that he would decide at “about 90” whether he should be reincarnated, affirming clearly that the People’s Republic of China would have no saying in this process.
He made the statement in a document issued after a gathering of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism in Dharamshala, a town in India. In it he says that when he reaches 90 he will consult the high lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Tibetan public, and would re-evaluate whether the Dalai Lama institution should continue or not.
The 76-year-old Dalai Lama mentioned that the next Dalai Lama, if there is to be one, will only be recognized by means of reincarnation, and the recognition of such reincarnation will be made through the traditional methods. He added that no recognition or acceptance will be given to a candidate chosen for political purposes by someone, including by the People’s Republic of China.
He promised to lay down specific guidelines to recognize the next Dalai Lama while he is still mentally capable, so that there be no room for deception. He explained that the person who reincarnates is the sole to have authority over how or where he or she is reborn, and is the one to know how he or she is to be recognized.
He said that if a 15th Dalai Lama needs to be recognized, he will be recognized only by those in the office of Dalai Lama’s trust, who will have to consult various heads of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
The institution of Dalai Lama has been existing since 1642, and the incumbent Dalai Lama is the 14th in this tradition. In previous comments he has said that it was possible that the institution be suppressed in its actual form, alluding that the next Dalai Lama could be elected like the pope in Rome or even like the politicians.
In Poland he made a comment saying that it was possible that the next Dalai Lama could be a woman.
The statement given on Saturday is said to put at ease the minds of the people who were concerned about the way the Dalai Lama institution will carry on.
Some of the people fear that the Chinese regime would simply appoint a Dalai Lama supported by Beijing. The Communist regime has already appointed a person as Panchen Lama, the second in rank after Dalai Lama himself.
The Chinese-appointed Panchen Lama is a supporter of the Chinese rule over Tibet, while the Panchen Lama appointed by Dalai Lama has been detained by China and has not been seen since 1995.
China is very concerned about the existence of the government in exile of Tibet, considering that it is plotting actions against the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China.
Dalai Lama made it clear that he has never expressed any idea of independence for Tibet, though in various occasions he has supported the cause of a larger autonomy, especially religious, for the people in Tibet.
