United join Vucinic race
Mirko Vucinic could set new heights this summer as the AS Roma striker has entered in Manchester United’s radar, according to the player’s agent, Alessandro Lucci.
The two sides are currently negotiating on the 27-year-old’s future which is very likely to be in Manchester. “I met Manchester United. We spoke about Vucinic, but we didn’t reach an agreement. United like Vucinic but there’s still a lot of work to do to see Mirko at Old Trafford,” said Lucci. On the other side, the English club declared through its representative David Gill that the Red Devils are interested in signing one more player, but has not revealed any name yet.
Vucinic has scored 46 goals in 147 games with the former champions whom he joined back in 2006 from Lecce and with whom he won the Italian Super Cup and two Italian Cups. AS Roma finished the season sixth in the Serie A with 63 points, three behind an UEFA Champions League position, being expected to fight for a place in the Europa League instead.
Their former coach Claudio Ranieri resigned earlier this year after he failed to make the superior phases in the UCL competition. Vincenzo Montella replaced him as interim in February, but the former player was sacked at the end of the season as Luis Enrique was appointed. The Spaniard signed a two-year deal with AS Roma whom he will be trying to lead through the Champions League next season and top in the Italian league.
AS Roma has already signed three big name players including former FC Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic, Jose Angel from Sproting Gijon and experienced Gabriel Heinze from Olympique Marseille. Krkic, who scored 26 goals for Pep Guardiola’s side, is to stay two years at the Olimpico, while Angel, who gathered 51 selections with his former club, is to set new heights in Rome. “The player has already said goodbye to his team-mates and is on his way to the airport to join his new club in pre-season training,” Gijon statement had read a the moment.
As for the Argentine, the 33-year-old Heinze, who scored seven goals as a defender for the French side, is at his eighth team. Having gathered tens of selections with top clubs such as PSG, Manchester United and Real Madrid, Heinze is for the first time in Italy where he is expected to shine bright. “It’s a great honour to wear this shirt. It’s easy to say yes to a club like Roma.”
If he joins Manchester United, Vucinic will become the fourth big name move after Ashley Young, Phil Jones and keeper David De Gea. The former Atletico Madrid keeper finished the season with 11 clean sheets and 154 saves, something which attracted big sides’ interest. Untied won the race for the 20-year-old who is now ready to replace Edwin Vand der Sar who quit football this summer.
The Red Devils had an impressive season, winning he Premier League title and reaching the UEFA Champions League final which they lost to FC Barcelona 1-3. Their pre-season included three wins of three games as Alex Ferguson’s side beat Seattle Sounders 7-0, Chicago Fire 3-1, and MLS All Stars 4-0. They will meet FC Barcelona again on July 31 in a friendly game, while the new season starts away against West Bromwich Albion on August 14.
