Seattle End 17-Loss Nightmare
Seattle beat Yankees to put nightmare behind
Mariners have broken their negative streak of 17 defeats on Wednesday when they beat New York Yankees 9-2 at the Yankee stadium. Seattle are now ready to reconsider themselves after they ended a 21-day drought.
Just like in the previous game, Mariners had a better start, but this time they managed the lead until the end of the game, only allowing Yanks to cut deficits. The first two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw the visitors take a minimal advantage through Suzuki who scored his first point after Ackley tripled to right. The fourth round also went dry as Mariners doubled their lead in the fifth through Cust. Ackley singled to left, allowing him to resuscitate his side with Suzuki getting to second.
Yankees’ first reply came in the same inning through Martin who cut the deficit to one pint following Jeter’s sacrifice fly to center. The next term went with the both sheets clean, but the seventh one saw the same away side provide a six-point consistent lead. Ackley grounded into fielder’s choice to second as Suzuki made it 3-1, also thanks to a throwing error committed by baseman Cano.
Furthermore, Carp tripled to center as all Ryan, Ackley and Smoak stunned the former East leader with a three-point trot which buried them alive. Gutierrez then doubled to center as Carp scored the last point of the midway rally. New York would only score a consolation point in the eighth through Granderson as Mariners were preparing for their first win in more than 20 days.
Kennedy doubled to center, allowing Ackley to make it 8-2, while Carp singled to center for Kennedy’s ninth one. Despite the win and because of the 17-loss streak, Seattle remain foot of the table in the West, 3 gamesback behind Oakland, with a .423 record of 44 wins and 60 losses. The victory over Yankees was their 19h in the road and first in the second half of the season.
On the other side, New York are second, three gamesback behind leaders Boston Red Sox, with a .598 record which includes 61 wins and 41 defeats, the loss to Mariners being their fourth in the past ten games and 18th at home. “We’ve got a long flight, an off day tomorrow and this is a real big win for us. When you’ve got a monkey on your back that size, it’s damn hard to get it off… These guys haven’t felt good in a long time,” said Seattle manager Eric Wedge who hopes his side have already put the bad days behind.
Oakland Athletics 13 – 4 Tampa Bay Rays
Oakland have extended their lead to three wins when they crashed Rays last night at the O.co Coliseum where the hosts scored all their points in a row and where the visitors scored their only points in the last term. The first two innings went scoreless though, while the third one saw Weeks bring the first lead for this side after Matsui doubled to center.
But things got much wilder in the fourth inning when the same home side rallied past Rays with a nine-point trot the visitors were unable to manage. Sizemore tripled to center as Jackson and Powell made it 3-0. Even more than that, Sizemore made it four right afterwards, following Weeks’ single to center.
