The Suspects Being Brought In by Police
Fourteen suspected al-Qaeda militants were charged late Friday by a court in Ankara with planning an attack on the United States embassy in Turkey. A 15th was released but he still may face trial.
The charge comes as the United States State Secretary Hillary Clinton is visiting Turkey’s cultural and economic capital Istanbul, where she attended the Contact Group on Libya on Friday, and is to attend the Islamic Conference meeting on Saturday.
The suspects were apprehended before Clinton’s arrival to Istanbul, and are believed to be Turkish militants affiliated with al-Qaeda, which try to avenge the killing in May by the U.S. military of their leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
The ways of the al-Qaeda and their interpretation of Islam is not well received by the Turkish population, which lives in a secular state, although they share the religion of Islam.

Still, al-Qaeda and other radical groups have managed to make some adepts in Turkey and be active to some point.
Anatolia agency says that one of the suspects had watched the U.S. embassies in Ankara and other foreign missions.
700 kilograms of chemicals and bomb-making instructions were found in Ankara besides riffles, maps and ammunition.
One of the suspects had been under police check for months, and was captured a week ago at the outskirts of the capital, where he is said to have received military training. The others were surrounded on Tuesday.
On Friday, 13 Turkish troops were killed in the southeastern region of Diyarbakir, in an ambush staged by militants of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party, an organization considered terrorist by Turkey and the other member states.
10 al-Qaeda suspects have been arrested in June, while preparing an attack on Incirlik, the military airport from where the US send supply troops to Iraq. Some of the suspects are said to be trained in the al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan.
