Chavez To Commence Second Phase of Cancer Treatment in Cuba
Hugo Chavez
Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez announced on Saturday he would return to Havana, Cuba, where he is to continue his treatment of cancer with a second phase that may include chemotherapy.
He announced he was going to send a letter to the Venezuelan president of the national assembly Fernando Soto Rojas to ask for legislative authorization, as the Constitution requires. He did not mention how long would he stay in Cuba this time.
Chavez went through surgery on June 20, when a pelvic cancerous tumor was removed from his body.
On that occasion he ruled the country from abroad, prompting many politicians to demand the vice president of the country to step in and take temporary charge, according to the constitutional provisions.
Chavez made a spectacular return from Havana, in the eve of the national celebration of the Bolivarian revolution, which he did not attend however because of his condition.
His impromptu homecoming happened when moves within the ranks of the Chavista movement began to indicate the beginning of a domestic struggle for power.
This second phase comes after a Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paolo, Brazil, one of the best hospitals in South America, announced that the third phase of the treatment could be realized in their clinic.

Before he announced he was going to Havana, the Venezuelan president received the President of Peru Ollanta Humala, who wished him the best in the “battle he was leading,” assured him of his prayers, and that his country still needs him to fulfil his mission.
Over the past few weeks, Chavez shortened his television shows, renounced his night speeches, saying he was under strict doctor’s orders. However, he was able to lead a cabinet reunion.
Chavez has been in power in Venezuela for the last 12 years, and is expected to run for a new term in office.
