Boston lose to Rays but keep the leading position
Rays stunned the East leaders 9-6 on Friday night at the Tropicana Field, but Boston keep the leading position thanks to a 1.5 gap against Yankees who were also stunned by Toronto the same day.
Zobrist brought the first lead for Rays in the first inning following Upton’s single to center, while McDonald evened the situation in the second one after hitting a 404-foot homer. Tampa Bay broke back immediately through Zobrist, who also fired a 380 footer, and Johnson, Fuld and Damon respectively as the hosts made it 5-1 after the first two terms. Boston cut the deficit to three points in the third inning when Ellsbury hit a 399 footer, only to be left five points adrift thanks to a couple of more points scored by Kotchman and Shoppach.
The fourth and fifth rounds went scoreless for both sides, but the sixth one saw the two teams score three more points. Pedroia hit a 412-foot homerun, while Kotchman imitated him right afterwards, putting the Rays five points ahead. Upton followed him immediately as Rays were nearing a big win in St. Petersburg.
Boston managed to score though three more points in the seventh and eighth term, but it was too late as Tampa Bay were celebrating their 22nd home win. Said manager Maddon: “I do believe if you’re looking at this big picture and are worried about whether you play well for seven days or whatever it may be, you’re really setting yourself up probably for a bad moment. You don’t say we need to win five out of seven. You don’t say that stuff. You play tonight, work the process. If you work the process well, you should come out on top.”
Rays remain third in the East with a .549 record which features 50 wins and 41 losses, the victory over the leaders being their fifth in the past ten games. Boston stay top with a .604 percentage, including 55 wins and 36 defeats, the loss to Rays being their second in the past ten games.
Toronto Blue Jays 7 – 1 New York Yankees
Toronto destroyed the former leaders on Friday night at the Rogers center where the visitors could only score a leveler early in the second term. Jays got the first lead in the first inning through Thames who scored the first point from Escobar’s single. Posada evened the situation in the second term as Yankees seemed to stick by their opponents.
Unfortunately, they would concede six points in a row without scoring any. Jays got back the lead in the fourth round thanks to Snider, while Encarnacion made it 3-1 also thanks to a throwing error committed by fielder Granderson. Concerning the fifth round, it saw the same Toronto extend their advantage to five points. Finally, Davis gave his side a comprehensive and unexpected win in the eighth term, following Escobar’s single.
Despite the victory, Toronto lie second from the bottom in the East with a .500 percentage, including 47 wins and 47 losses, the success over Yankees being their fifth in a row and seventh in the past ten games. On the other side, New York stay second with a .589 record which features 53 wins and 37 defeats, the loss to Jays being their second in a row and sixth in the past ten meetings.
Baltimore Orioles 5 – 6 Cleveland Indians
Indians managed to secure their leading position in the Central after edging Orioles at the Orioles Park at Camden Yards where the visitors succeeded to come from behind every time they needed to. Cleveland grabbed the first lead in the second term after Sizemore converted LaPorta’s single to center. Orioles reached their best in the same term, going 2-1 ahead thanks to two homers hit by Wieters and Reimold.
The third round saw Indians take back the lead through Cabrera, who fired a 371 footer, and Brantely who made it 3-2 right afterwards. But Baltimore broke back immediately through Markakis, but even so the hosts wouldn’t get to take any lead until the end. Cleveland built a two-point lead in the fifth term after Sizemore fired a 414-foot homerun and Hafner made it 5-3.
Baltimore managed to level back through Jones and Hardy, but that was their last chance to break through. Indians were given the precious winner by LaPorta who scored the last point in the sixth term. The next three terms went scoreless for both sides, something which allowed the away side to seal the victory as well as the leading position.
Cleveland have gone .538 this term, including 49 wins and 42 defeats, the win over Orioles being their second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 22nd on the road where they remain though negative (22-24). Baltimore lie foot of the table in the East with a .400 poor percentage which features 36 victories and 54 losses, the defeat to Indians being their ninth in a row and 24th at home.
