One of the most common drugs for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can trigger the development of diabetes and can also lead to weight gain
A very famous antipsychotic drug has been recently linked to weigh problems and insulin resistance, because it lowers the body temperature.
According to a new study, it seems that olanzapine (known for its brand name Zyprexa) was recently tied to things such as gaining weight and impaired blood sugar levels. The drug is used to help people suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder cope better and keep their conditions under control. According to the Dutch researchers involved in the study, they wanted to see the ”mysterious interaction between schizophrenia and diabetes.”
For the study, the researchers, led by Dr. Anton Scheurink, recruited healthy adult male volunteers on whom the effects of the olanzapine on the metabolism. From what the researchers said, it seems that the results of the study have clearly shown that the drug affects weight gain and it also reduces the temperature of the body, thus decreasing the energy expenditure.
Furthermore, it seems that the findings that the drug affects body temperature may also account for several other side effects of the drug. Given that the drug also affects the peripheral glucose metabolism, it may lead to the impairment of a thing called impaired insulin sensitivity. The authors of the study also mentioned that previous research on the issue had found related side effects to the drug, but this is the first study to show that olanzapine affects the temperature of the body, thus leading to an increased food intake, sedation, high blood sugar and even body weight gain and insulin resistance.
The thing is that even though the drug has so many side effects, it is also one of the best drugs approved by the FDA to keep conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder under control. Hopefully, researchers will come up with some sort of a drug with fewer side effects to give people suffering from such harsh conditions, in order to protect them from developing diabetes or other such chronic diseases.
