Fifth seed Anabel Medina has captured her fifth Palermo title after beating Polona Hercog in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the big final, the world number 34 having joined the three-player shortlist to win a WTA event five times.
The Spaniard beat the world number 36 in just over an hour, managing to break the Slovak in both terms. On the other side, the 20-year-old Hercog could only hold several services, withough being able to take any consistent lead throughout the entire meeting. Medina has also won her 11th title of career, while her final opponent was chasing her second one.
En route to the final, the Spaniard had defeated Petra Cetkovska of Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3. Previous to that, Medina had grabbed hard-fought win over Irina Begu who had previously ousted second seed Roberta Vinci. The Spaniard beat the Romanian revelation in three sets after surviving a midway scare, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0. On the other side, Hercog was following a 6-2, 6-2 victory against main favorite Flavia Pennetta, but she couldn’t pass Anabel, either despite the great week.
Said the 28-year-old winner: “I think the environment of this tournament is the key. I always manage to play well here and I’m also really happy to win here for the fifth time – the other players who have done that on the WTA are really, really good players. Now I’m going to go and celebrate this victory.”
En route to the semi finals, Hercog had ousted Klara Zakopalova, Alberta Brianti and Karin Knapp, the first round-win being the hardest to pick. Concerning Medina’s route, the Spaniard had eliminated unseeded and compatriot Lata Arruabarrena and Anna Floris of Italy.
For Medina, the Palermo title is her second of the season, the Spaniard having won the Estoril event, as well, thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 final victory against Kristina Barrois of Germany. The three-player shortlist she has joined includes Williams sisters who have won five Wimbledon and Australian Open trophies respectively, and another former world leader Kim Clijsters who holds five Luxembourg titles.
Hercog played her third final of the season, her first ever title dating from Bastad, tournament she won last week in Sweden. Slovak’s career finals score goes 1-2, but she has already become a real threat for any of the top seeds so far this term.
Concerning the Palermo doubles, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci pair won their fifth title together, beating Andrea Hlavackova and Klara Zakopalova in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
