Internet research
Google has announced today that it plans to open the “Internet research institute” in October 2011. The institute will be part of the Humboldt University which is one of the oldest German universities located in Berlin.
The institute will be in fact the result of a partnership between Google, the Humboldt University and three other German institutions and will focus it’s studies on the Internet’s evolution and on its impact on “society, science, politics and economy” as Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google declared. He also added that we are living in the era of the Internet and therefore there is a need of an institute able to “describe the changes that are associated with the development of this breakthrough technology”.
Google is willing to invest serious money in the institute, especially in the first three years. The amount announced was of $6.41 million a year. After the first three years, Google will try to find sponsors and most likely will support the institute with less money from its personal funds. But what’s most important is that Schmidt felt the need to accentuate that “the new institute will be fully independent of Google”.
The other three universities that will be part of the partnership are Berlin’s University of Arts, the Hans-Bredow-Institute located in Hamburg and the Social Science Research Center also located in Berlin. The president of the Humboldt University considers that this institute will prove its importance, because “the Internet is an achievement that has had far-reaching changes on the world” and many are interested in a better understanding of the phenomenon. In my opinion it’s an opportunity for young students that are interested in these new technologies that have taken control of people’s lives to some extent.
