Button fastest in first free practice
World champion Sebastian Vettel crashed his car during the first practice after applying the break too late at Degner One zone. The German managed to spend 22 laps on the Suzuka track and set the third best time in the end.
Jenson Button, who has just re-signed a new deal with McLaren Mercedes, was the quickest in the opening practice, stopping the clock at one minute and 33,634 seconds as fastest lap. The Briton, who is chasing his third title of the season in Japan, was followed by team mate Lewis Hamilton who came just 0,091 seconds behind his conational.
Kamui Kobayashi crashed his car seriously and was very close to destroying the car completely following a dangerous maneuver which saw the Sauber driver try to cut a corner with the DRS system open. The Japanese, driver who lost his back, managed though to stay 24 laps and come 12th fastest.
Vettel, who is chasing his second straight title in Japan, set a 0,456 second gap against the leader, while former world champion Fernando Alonso, who lost his second position in the driver table to Button, came fourth, 0,738 seconds slower than the Briton. Vettel’s team mate Mark Webber, who has not won a title this year, came behind the Spaniard with a 0,792 second gap.
One of the biggest surprises of the first session was provided by Jaime Alguersuari of Toro Rosso who came sixth quickest in Suzuka, being the first to overcome the one second gap. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa was 0,648 seconds behind him and had Sebastien Buemi just behind him.
Michael Schumacher, who managed to impress in Belgium and Italy was the ninth fastest driver with a 2,399 second gap. Vitaly Petrov from Renault and team mate Bruno Senna came tenth and 11th nearly three second behind the leader. Nico Hulkenberg, who will run the Force India car this weekend in Suzuka, came 12th with a 3,066 second gap, just tens of a second faster than his team mate Sergio Perez.
Nico Rosberg, who shined pretty often during the free practices this year, set a poor 4,563 second gap after 18 laps and was followed by both Williams’s Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado. Williams won just two points in the previous seven races.
Lotus also grabbed back to back positions with Jarno Trulli coming 19th and Karun Chandok nearly one second slower than his team mate. Timo Glock and Jerome D’Ambrosio picked the next positions, while Hispania’s Daniel Ricciardo and Narain Karthikeyan came on 23rd and 24th positions respectively.
Sebastian Vettel will become the youngest double champion of the world in sports if the German finishes the Sunday race within the first ten positions. Thus, he could finish the year first with four races left in the season.
Said the 24 year old: “I think if you have the ability, the package overall, to do well around here, you have to enjoy it and you have to make sure that if the chance is there to finish on the podium you finish on the podium… So we try to race as usual and we try to get the best out of ourselves.”
The Red Bull driver is top of the driver table with 309 points, being followed by Jenson Button with 185 and Fernando Alonso with 184.
The second free practice is scheduled for Friday, while the third one as well as the qualifying round will take place on Saturday. The race will start on Sunday in what is expected to be one of the most exciting races of the year.
