Hamas Executes Two For Espionage for Israel
Gazan Troops
A Palestinian man and his son were executed on Tuesday in the Gaza Strip being accused of having spied for Israel, an execution that defies the prerogative of Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, to have the last saying in such matters.
Hamas said that the men confessed to having provided Israeli Defense Forces with information that helped them track down Palestinians and groups, including the one of Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi, which was killed in an air strike in 2004.
The two men were executed after they lost a court appeal against the sentence. According to the Palestinian law, the executions are permitted but they require the sanction of president Mahmoud Abbas.
In West Bank Abbas has refrained from sanctioning executions, instituting a moratorium on capital punishment.

Three Gazans were executed this year by Hamas, and five more in 2010, most of them for espionage for Israel.
On Tuesday, the relatives of those who were executed burnt tires in protest until they were dispersed by the police.
Hamas and Fatah signed an agreement earlier this year in Cairo, seen as a historical reconciliation agreement, by which the two political forces were supposed to join forces toward establishing a state for Palestinians.
The agreement was put on hold because of disputes over the format of power-sharing in the territories where Palestinians live.
The agreement between Hamas and Fatah was seen as a victory for terrorism by Israel, since it considers Hamas as a terrorist group, but the decision was made to continue to support the Palestinian Authority in hope to bring them back to the negotiation table.
Palestinians are pushing toward proclaiming unilaterally a state of their own within the boundaries before the invasion in 1967.
Israel opposes such action, considering that it is only by means of negotiations with Israel that a Palestinian state could be established.
Palestinian Authority wants to ask for full membership of the United Nations during the general assembly in September.
In 2006, Hamas won in democratic election and became the dominant force in Gaza. That triggered a blockade by Israel motivated by the necessity to cut them all weapon supply possibilities.
