Baltacha reaches second term in Washington
Sixth favorite Elena Baltacha has made a straight0set progress at the American event where the Scott beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 7-6 in the first day to face Virginie Razzano of France in the second round.
A couple of early breaks propelled the 27-year-old to a four-game lead she eventually converted into a first overall lead, while the Kazak could only threaten her with a breaker in the second set. Shvedova evened the score at five in the last term, but another late break allowed the favorite to pick the victory in just over an hour.
Baltacha, who hasn’t shined too bright so far this season, will next meet Virginie Razzano who has made an easy progress after easing past Misaki Doi of Japan in straight similiar sets, 6-2, 6-2. “I felt I played a good, solid match. She stepped it up in the second set and made me work very hard. But I stayed strong mentally and am really happy to be through to the next round… I haven’t played Razzano in a long time. I know it’s going to be a tough match, but I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge,” said the Scott.
The two will meet for the fourth time, the head to head series having gone 2-1 to the world number 81 Frenchwoman who last defeated the 57th-ranked at the 2007 Tokyo Open. Baltacha’s only win comes from the 2001 Eastbourne event. The same day youngster Heather Watson eased past Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-4, 6-1 to set a Stephanie Dubois meeting in the second term. The Canadian beat Sania Mirza of India 7-5, 6-4 and will meet the youngster for the first time this season.
Top seed in Elkridge is Shahar Peer, who is chasing her first title of the season, and who is to meet Ryoko Fuda of Japan in the opening term. Alla Kudryavtseva and Schanelle Scheepers will also fight for a second term berth, while Sloane Stephens meets Varvara Lepchenko. On the same first half of the table, Alberta Brianti is to confront Anne Keothavong and Tamria Paszek of Austria faces host Melanie Oudin.
Melinda Czink of Hungary will fight another local favorite Madison Brengle in what will beat tough game between two unseeders. Concerning the second half of the draw, second favorite Nadia Petrova is to play Alexandra Mueller of Untied States. American Alison Riske meets Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in an all-North American clash. Bojana Jovanovski is favored by a BYE and will face either Jie Zheng or Jill Craybas ion the second round. Finally, Jelena Dokic and Shuai Zhang will also fight for a second term place, while Irina Falconi will make her American debut against Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
