Rumors say that the chief patent counsel of Apple Inc. is planning to terminate his contract with Apple in the near future. The timing is going to affect Google, because the company is currently in the middle of a large number of legal battles, according to reliable sources.
Currently, Apple has to face a litigation regarding smartphone patents. The situation it’s complicated mostly because of the phonemakers who have decided to use the Android software provided by Google. In addition, in the middle of all this turmoil, the one in charge of the patent portfolio related to the well known Apple iPhone, Richard Lutton Junior is leaving the company. The reasons of his departure remain unclear.
On the Linkedln web page, the one listed as chief IP counsel of Apple is BJ Watrous who used to work on a similar position for Hewlett Packard. Apparently, Apple is covering its back.
You might wonder why this increased number of lawsuits related to the cellphone industry is taking place. Well, considering that the smartphone market is expanding and provides any investor with a satisfying profit, Apple and Google, the two main companies that have fully taken advantage of the market’s opportunities, need to continue fighting for the title of market leader.
To secure its position on the market, last month, Apple decided to collaborate with Microsoft Corp, Research In Motion Ltd (the manufacturer of Blackberry) and a number of other three companies that work in the field in order to make sure it will acquire an impressive portfolio of technology patents that were the property of Nortel Networks. In the end, Apple managed to outbid Google and win over the portfolio with the help of a $4.5 billion deal.
Moreover, last week on Friday, Apple found it necessary to file a patent complaint against HTC (a Taiwanese company that produces smartphones). Florian Mueller, an intellectual property analyst said that “the second complaint against HTC shows that Apple feels it did not handle its patent litigation perfectly in the past”.
In the last month, Apple has also lost an important legal battle, that against Nokia. Because it failed to achieve victory, the company had to pay royalties and a lump sum that it’s still a mystery. In process is another major battle that involves patents and Samsung Electronics. Even if Samsung is one of the suppliers Apple relies on, Apple is legally fighting against some of the Galaxy smartphone phone products that Samsung provides on the market.
Until now, no comments were made related to Lutton’s departure. Apple’s representatives decided to avoid the subject as well as Lutton.
