Bipolar disorder is characterized by swingy moods, like rapidly going from a good mood to mania. Usually, when people enter their manic state, they usually sleep less, have a lot of energy and they also experience extreme self-confidence. Although for many of us these characteristics may seem ideal, for people who are suffering from bipolar disorder, things can get really out of hand and they may end up in things such as run up credit card debt or even problematic marriages. “The fact that positive emotion has gone awry is something unique about bipolar disorder, as almost all other emotional disorders are characterized by difficulties in negative emotions,” said psychologist Dr. June Gruber.
Gruber also talked about how being too positive can turn out to be very bad for people who suffer from bipolar disorder, even in the period when they are not in their manic state. One of the weirdest things about bipolar disorder is that even when people are in remission, they still experience a lot more positive thinking and hyperactive behavior than most people do. Although being all positive does not sound to bad, things can get a little hasty and problematic for people who suffer or have suffered from bipolar disorder.
Gruber said that in her experiment, he clearly observed that bipolar people had positive thoughts even when showed images or clips of sad things or even gross things like digging through feces. However, it seems that if these positive emotions are experience for a very long time or at a very strong rate, they can become problematic and the things to follow may not be as positive.
