Seattle concede 15 straight loss
Red Sox thwarted Mariners 12-8 yesterday at the Fenway Park where the visitors conceded their 15th loss in a row to drop bottom in the West Conference. Boston, by contrast, cemented their leading position in the East with a four straight win which has propelled them three gamesback above Yankees.
Despite a promising start which saw Seattle take an early 2-0 lead, Boston replied with a five-point trot in the same first term not to allow the opponents to get any lead until the end. Olive opened the game with a 370-foot homerun, being followed by Ryan who doubled the lead in what seemed to be a good day for the Mariners. Red Sox broke back immediately through Ellsbury who cut the deficit after Gonzalez singled to center.
Furthermore, Youkilis fired a 396 footer to even the situation, while the same Gonzalez brought the first lead for Boston right afterwards. The first inning ended with Red Sox’s fifth point scored by Crawford, following Saltalamacchia’s singling to right. The next three innings went scoreless for both sides, while the fifth one saw them score six more points, five of which from the home side and one from the other.
Gutierrez cut the deficit to two points after Ryan doubled to left, but that could only trigger Boston’s six-point midway rally. Crawford singled to left as Gonzalez and Youkilis made it 7-3. Reddick then doubled to left for Ortiz’s eighth point, while Saltamacchia singled to center for Crawford and Reddick’s last fifth term points.
The sixth one brought the home side yet another point through Pedroia who made things look clear as possible after Gonzalez singled to right. Ryan hit a 361-foot homerun in the seventh, while Cust, Gutierrez and Suzuki put the visitors four points behind the eventual winners. Boston’s last reply came right afterwards through Reddick who made it 12-7.
As for mariners, their last consolation point came in the ninth term when Ackley doubled to left for Gutierrez’s last point of the meeting. Seattle have now dropped 1 gameback behind third Oakland in the West with a .426 percentage which features 43 wins and 58 defeats, the loss to Boston being their 31st on the road.
On the other side, Red Sox are first with a .626 record in the East, featuring 62 wins and 37 defeats, the win over Mariners being their fourth in a row and eighth in the past ten games. Said Ryan: “It seems like once again it’s Groundhog Day. This is definitely frustrating. There aren’t too many laughs now. There shouldn’t be.” Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge admitted the loss, claiming that “they’re a veteran hitting team. They obviously had a plan.”
Baltimore Orioles 3 – 9 Los Angeles Angels
Angels grabbed a comprehensive win yesterday at the Oriole Park at Camden Yards where the visitors managed to keep their lead throughout the entire meeting. The first two innings went scoreless in what seemed to be a tight game, but the next two saw Angels power through to a three-point rally. Abreu singled to right for Hunter’s first point, while Trumbo sacrificed to left in the fourth term as Callaspo doubled the lead.
Kendrick finished the early run with a third point scored from Uzturis’s double to right. The fifth term also went dry for the two teams, but the Angels were still looking as favorites for the victory. Orioles’ first reply came in the sixth inning through Jones, who fired a 446 footer, and Markakis who put his side one point within Los Angeles.
After a seven-term drought, Angels provided yet another six-point rally. Trout fired a 414 footer, while Callaspo and Kendrick made it 6-2. Hunter, too, hit a 391-foot homerun, being followed by Izturis who gave his side a six-point lead in the same term. New York Yankees 7 – 5 Oakland Athletics
New York managed to overcome a two-point deficit set in the second inning by Oakland who failed to take advantage of the great start, dropping even four points behind Yankees in the fifth term. Pennington singled to right as Suzuki brought the first lead for Athletics. Sogard then doubled to center, allowing Pennington to double the lead. Unfortunately, that was the last time the visitors held the lead as New York powered through to a six-point rally.
Jones singled to center, while Martin cut the deficit to one point in the same second term. The third inning went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one brought Yankees the leveler and the first lead through Martin and Jones who made it 3-2 after Nunez doubled to left.
Furthermore, Granderson fired a 393 footer, being followed by Jeter who put the hosts three points ahead of their opponents who were losing more pace as the game progressed. Jones then reached on infield single to shortstop, allowing Teixeira to make it 6-2. Oakland could only cut the deficit to two points but never go ahead.
The sixth and seventh term went dry for both teams, while the eighth one saw Crisp and Matsui make it 4-6. But Yankees broke back immediately through Nunez who scored the seventh point for his side. Finally, the game ended with Weeks scoring the last point for Oakland and New York celebrating their 32nd win at home.

Philadelphia Phillies 5 – 3 San Diego Padres
Despite a poor start which saw the hosts concede an early point, Phillies managed to get rid of Padres yesterday at the Citizens Ball Park where the leaders only provided a five-point midway rally which also brought them a crucial win in Philadelphia. Maybin scored the first point for San Diego in the first term after Headley singled to right, but that could only arouse Phillies’ upcoming run.
Victorino singled to center, allowing Utley to level the score with Howard getting to second. Ibanez then doubled to right as Howard made it 2-1 with Victorino getting to third. The second term went scoreless but the game was far from being a tight one. Philadelphia continued their run in the third term when Ibanez singled to center for Howard’s third point.
