Crack Down on Demonstrators in Belarus
A. Lukashenko
Russia must react to the brutality of the Belorus regime against the opposition leaders, a human rights activist said on Thursday.
This radical reaction comes after the police in Belarus detained on Wednesday a group of at least five journalists during an unauthorized rally against the economic policies of the regime, which already led to a currency in the ex-Soviet republic.
According to Belarusian human rights activists, around 400 people were detained by the government in Minsk on Wednesday during the rally.  Police is said to have released them in the meantime.
Crack Down on Demonstrators in Belarus
Belorusian Protestors
This brutal crackdown on protestors sparked disapproval all over the country, while the Russian Helsinki Group said that this kind of brutality cannot go unchecked by the international community, since it is no longer a domestic matter but an international concern.
Russia is compelled to act, the leader of Helsinki Group said, exactly because it is the only country in Europe that still has serious ties with the regime in Minsk, given that an union of the two states still exists formally, though it has had its ups and downs lately.
Situation in Belarus becomes more and more instable as the regime in Minsk has to employ brutal crackdowns in order to maintain its rule, against the background of an increasing poverty of the population.
President Aleksander Lukashenko is deemed by many European leaders as the last dictator in Europe standing. He has managed to win four terms in office, since 1994, being criticized by the opposition for his economic policies and for keeping the country in a state of political isolation.
