Red Sox Concede Second Straight, But Stay Top
Paders stun Boston on Fenway
Bottom San Diego hindered Boston of cementing their leading position in the East as the Padres stunned Red Sox 5-1 yesterday at the Fenway Park. The loss allows Yankees to go .5 behind the top spot.
An amazing fourth term saw the visitors score four of the five points. Venable scored the first point of the term with a 389-foot homerun as Padres managed to keep the sheet clean in the first four terms. The second and third rounds went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one found Hudson opening the mid-way remarkable session. Venable walked and Hudson doubled to lead with Rizzo getting to third and Maybin to second. Rizzo then made it 3-0 right afterwards, while Maybin scored the fourth point.
Headley singled to right and the same Venable scored his second point for a comfortable 5-0 advantage. Red Sox’ first and only reply came in the fifth inning through Ellsbury who gave the only consolation for the favorites after Gonzalez singled to center. “It’s good that he was rewarded for a performance that lasted like a 5 1/2-hour period. He started warming up at 1 o’clock and I told him he was out of the game at 5:25. He deserved that,” said Padres’ manager Bud Black.
On the other side, Boston’s manager Terry Francona looked pretty disappointed of Lackey who left the field in the fourth inning: “He went back out after the rain delay and just looked like he lost his feel. I don’t think the conditions were good for either pitcher, but he just lost his feel.”
Despite the defeat, Red Sox remain first in the East with 44 wins and 30 losses, while Padres lie foot of the table in the West with a .421 wining percentage, one of the worst in the league, which includes 32 wins and 44 defeats. The win over the leaders is their second in a row, third in the past ten games.
Pittsburgh Pirates 5 – 4 Baltimore Orioles

The first one brought the opener lead after McCutchen singled to left center, while the latter one doubled to advantage after Walker grounded into double play.

Even more than that, Hardy evened the situation after Jones grounded out to second, while Scott and Reynolds put their side two points ahead in the fourth term.
That was also the turning point of the game as Pirates were preparing for a consistent rally which saw them score three points in a row and thus draw the victory. McCutchen made it 3-4 after Walker grounded to shortstop, while Wood and McKenry took advantage of Davis’s error to give their side the hard-fought win. Angels are third in the West Conference with a .487 record which includes 37 wins and 39 losses, while Florida lie foot of the table in the East with 33 wins and 42 defeats, the one to Angels being their ninth in the past ten games.
Milwaukee Brewers 3 – 6 Tampa Bay Rays
