About 100 Gypsies Occupy St Paul's Cathedral near Rome Protesting
Deportation
St Paolo's Cathedral
Romanian press reports that about one hundred Gypsies from Romania occupied on Friday Basilica San Paulo Fuori le Muri (“outside the walls [of Rome]”) after the camp where they were staying, at the outskirts of the city, was demolished by authorities.
According to the Italian press, which brings additional information to the story, 300 Gypsies from Romania were expulsed from the nomad camp outside the capital of Italy, and are to be sent back to their country.
The action was done with the participation of the city hall council members, and the members of organizations that fight for integration of Roma population.

Many of the people refused to accept demolition of their camp and the expulsion for fear that they may not be able to return to Italy.
Gianni Alemanno, the mayor of Rome, says that 67 percent of the Gypsies evacuated today were criminals, and that they were lying about the fact that they has no home.
The mayor says they have homes in their country and that they came to Italy to make some extra money.
Basilica San Paolo Fuori le Muri is the place where the relics of Saint Paul are being preserved, being a magnificent cathedral and the second place of reverence in Italy after the cathedral in Vatican that hosts the relics of Saint Peter.
This incident occurs at a time when all three main branches of Christianity, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholics and most Protestants, celebrate the Good Friday, the day when the Savior of the world walked the way to Calvary, was crucified and placed into the tomb, out of which He raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, as the Christian Credo states.
Italy and France have a rather long history of deporting Roma population back to the East of Europe, drawing severe criticism from political and civil bodies, that accused them of racism and discrimination.
Most of the time, these deportations were of no consequence, given that the Gypsies were on the streets of these countries soon after they were deported.
