The Indonesian State Own Enterprise Minister Mustafa Abubakar said that the Indonesian Government is currently studying the need for the establishment of the proposed infrastructure bank to accelerate the national development programs.
“We are studying it as requested by the President” said Mustafa at Dhanapala Building, the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.
He said the Indonesian President asked for a review of whether it is necessary to establish a new bank or to use an existing state-owned banks focusing on infrastructure financing for the formation of the infrastructure bank.
Infrastructure bank is required to encourage infrastructure related projects
Meanwhile, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) President Director Sofyan Basir said that BRI, one of the state owned bank, will fully support any decisions made by the SOE Ministry.
“I don’t have any information, it is beyond my authority, let Mr. Minister (decide) later. In principal all state own bank fully support the idea. Even today we already support infrastructure (projects), it already exists. If acceleration is required then maybe it can be done by dividing the portions (of infrastructure projects), “he said.
Indonesian business has asked the government to support long-term financing with relatively low interest rates for infrastructure development. One such step is to accelerate the establishment of the Indonesia Development Bank.
Chairman of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, Suryo Bambang Sulistio said that the organization have been preparing the bank concept. He said the draft concept will be submitted to the government in the near future.
In addition, the Chamber of Commerce also asked the government to encourage and provide guidance for domestic institutional investors such as insurance agencies, pension fund managers and social security to support the financing of infrastructure projects.
Chamber of Commerce also urged any other financing scheme alternatives such as special bonds for infrastructure projects.
“The business world requires a new paradigm in tax policy that does not solely aim to increase state revenue but also has a development mission, particularly in infrastructure development,” said Bambang
