LAS VEGAS: As many had predicted, Netflix will increase its global
footprint and launch in India. Today the company said it will come to
India with competitive plans. This is excellent news for the industry
and viewers as the company will provide lot of content to be streamed
over the internet to its users.
For some who do not know about
the company, Netflix is an on-demand internet media streaming facility
that is very popular in the US and parts of Europe. It is available in
more than 50 countries across the world, including Switzerland, Austria,
France, Germany and more. Last year, the company expanded its services
to Japan, Spain, Portugal and Italy. And now it will be available
everywhere including India (except China).
The plans start from Rs 500 a month and go up to Rs 800. Ultra HD
content is also available, but only in the premium plan. People can opt
to get the Netflix streaming service to up to 4 screens. Local and
international content will be available at a click of a button.
Netflix will also focus on developing its own content and nearly double
the number of original shows to 31 from 16, its chief content officer
Ted Sarandos said recently.
Netflix has also announced their partnership with Dreamworks to expand its global partnership. You can read about it here.
The only issue we see with the service is the broadband speed in India.
Metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore etc do have good internet
speeds, but most parts of India still suffer with low broadband
penetration. This can be a challenge for the company to hold a firm
ground in India.
