Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) unveiled its new logo, colors (black
and gold) and crest at a ceremony at Union Station on Thursday, and
announced a new member to its ownership group.
The ownership group led by Henry Nguyen (Club Managing Partner) and
Peter Gruber (Executive Chairman) also includes Magic Johnson, Nomar
Garciaparra and his wife, Mia Hamm Garciaparra.
Thursday, actor Will Ferrell, who was born in Irvine, officially joined the 25-member group.
“This is not a joke,” Ferrell said. “I grew up playing soccer on the
mean streets of Irvine, California, starting when I was 8 years old, our
three boys all play soccer, my wife played soccer at Pomona. To say
that soccer is a big part of our lives is an understatement, and I’m
proud to be a member of this wonderful ownership group.”
He also joked that he’s never been a part owner of anything except for a 1984 Toyota Camry.
“We are thrilled to welcome Will to our diverse and dedicated team,”
Nguyen said. “His passion for sports and his authentic connection to Los
Angeles make him a perfect co-owner of LAFC.”
LAFC will debut in Major League Soccer for the 2018 season and will
be the 22nd franchise, following Atlanta United FC, set to debut in
2017.
LAFC was re-launched after the disbanding of Chivas USA following the 2014 season.
According to a release, the club colors “were chosen to represent the success, urban texture and glamour of Los Angeles.”
The club plans to build a 22,000-seat stadium at the current site of the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
Last month LAFC announced former MLS midfielder John Thorrington had been hired as executive VP of soccer operations.
