Christian Wulff has always said that he was not guilty of any charge brought against him, and that he had acted in good faith in the exercise of his mandate as president of Germany.
Wulff’s resignation was seen as a blow to Merkel’s credibility, because she was the one to support his candidacy, even though the presidency of Germany is largely a ceremonial office.
European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso congratulated the new German president and quoted German poet Goethe, who said that freedom and life are earned by those who conquer them every day.
Wulff leaves the office two years after his predecessor Horst Koehler, who had also been supported by Merkel, which casts a shadow over her capacity to back the right candidates. The scandal that involved Wulff have not touched the chancellor’s reputation in any way, and she was not involved in any of them.
Koehler resigned in 2010 after making some inappropriate comments about military deployment being vital for German’s economic success. Gauck becomes the 11th president of the Federal Republic of Germany.
