16 Killed In Homs As Syrian Government Shells The City
Homs
Syrian forces on Tuesday has intensified the shelling on the city of Homs, causing 16 people to die and scores to be injured in what seems to be an operation of the government to wipe out “the terrorist groups,” as the Syrian government said two weeks ago, when it started bombing the city.
Reports say that the city hospital has been hit, causing the Red Cross to call on Tuesday for a daily two-hour ceasefire to allow it to reach the people who needed help and were wounded. Red Cross showed that two of the people who were wounded were children, signaling that the situation in Syria may have already reached a social catastrophe.
The shelling of Baba Amr neighborhood in Homs lasted for two hours but did not seem the start of a military campaign, which was expected to happen and to remove and re-take all the neighborhoods that are controlled by the rebels.
The president of the International Committee Red Cross said that in Homs and the affected areas entire families have been stuck at home for days, without a possibility to buy bread and other necessities.
The president said that on Monday it was agreed with the Syrian authorities that at least two hours a day the fighting to be ceased so that the volunteers of the Red Crescent be able to do their work.
Activists say that the shelling of the Baba Amr neighborhood came as a result of the failure of the security forces to enter the neighborhoods controlled by the armed rebels.
As situation becomes almost untenable in Syria, the Friends for Syria organization is expected to convene on Friday in Tunisia to decide what to do about the restive country. U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton said that the “brave Syrian people” deserved support and that the meeting in Tunisia would show president Bashar al-Assad that he is isolated.
During the conflict in Libya, there was a similar organization based in Istanbul, which was the first to recognize the National Transitional Council in the north African country as the legitimate government and a partner to the Western world, which market the moment when the NTC started to make a difference in the conflict in Libya, given that the international community supported it with money and to some extent with weapons.
French foreign minister announced that he would support the idea of humanitarian corridors toward the embattled cities in the center of Syria. The corridor could, in the opinion of the French minister, be made in agreement with the Syrian authorities and could have NATO troops protecting those who should reach the people in need.
Russia said it would not attend the Friends for Syria meeting, because the Syrian authorities have not been invited, and only one point of view is being heard. Moscow has demanded that a special envoy be sent to Damascus in order to coordinate the humanitarian help.
US Senator John McCain said in Washington that America should find a way to arm the rebels in Syria so that they may win the conflict with the security forces.
Last Thursday, the United Nations General Assembly voted a resolution with no bonding power, but with a significant symbolic value, which condemns the policy of the Syrian government and demands Bashar al-Assad to hand power over to the deputy, to organize elections and to end violence in the country.
Russia and China opposed the resolution which was supported by the Arab League, and introduced by the Saudi Arabia. Russia and China also opposed the resolution in the Security Council, on February 4, but in the general assembly they did not have veto power, so that the resolution was eventually voted, sending a powerful message to Damascus.
