Second seed Juan Martin Del Potro has progressed into the Vienna quarter finals after defeating Philipp Petzschner in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 to face Tommy Haas in the best eight term.

It took the Argentine, winner of this year’s Delray Beach and Estoril events, nearly one hour and a half to advance through as the former US Open champion gave his opponent no chance to break. Delpo broke the German once in the opener, something which allowed him to take the first lead with some ease. He also saved four break points amid the term, suggesting a great showing.

As for the second set, it was controlled by the same Del Potro, who stole yet another break from this year’s Halle finalist whom he managed to oust after two terms. Overall, the Argentine finished the game with a 61 first serve percentage, six aces, three double faults, two breaks and a 70 service percentage. He also converted 41 percent of return points and won 67 points out of 118 played.

On the other side, Petzschner came up with a 57 first serve percentage, eight aces, four double faults and a poor 30 return percentage. The head to head series between the two has just begun with Delpo triumphing in the first meeting.

Said Del Potro after the game: “I think I played much better in this match than last week. I need to play better to win more matches. He was a tough opponent in the first round. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the last point – probably the best of the match – was a good way to win.”

Next up for the world number 15 is Tommy Haas who edged week’s revelation Aljaz Bedne in three sets after surviving an early scare, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The Slovenian won the first set after breaking his opponent early in the term to announce another big surprise after the success obtained against Ivo Karlovic in the opener.

But the second set saw the German even the situation thanks to a couple of breaks which propelled him two games atop. He also dropped another service but that did not hinder him of pushing the meeting further into a third set decider.

Finally, the last round was controlled at all facets by the same Haas who broke his opponent twice more without conceding any service until the end of it. He needed one hour and 42 minutes to reach the quarter finals where the German will surely have a harder time against Martin Del Potro.

Haas, who met Bedene for the first time in career, came up with a 63 first serve percentage, ten aces, three double faults and a 71 service percentage, winning at the same time 71 percent of service points. H also converted four out of seven break points, compared to his opponent’s showing which included a 51 first serve percentage, 12 aces, two breaks in six tries and a poor 29 return percentage.

The same day Daniel Brands provided one of the biggest surprises of the tournament, beating fourth seed Radek Stepanek in two sets, 6-4, 7-6. It took the German one hour and 20 minutes to oust the Czech who failed to convert any break point. Brands won the first set after breaking his opponent amid the term.

The second set saw the two hold their serves consistently with Brands dominating the tie break with some ease. Brands won the breaker at four and will next meet Steve Darcis of Belgium.

Brands finished the game with a 79 first serve percentage, seven aces, a double fault and a poor 22 return percentage. He also won 79 percent of service points and a break point conversion. On the other side, Stepanek came up with a 59 first serve percentage, four aces, three double faults and a 21 return percentage.

Darcis beat Dominic Thiem in straight similar sets, 6-2, 6-2, needing just one hour and five minutes to secure the quarter final berth. The Belgian broke his opponent twice in the opener when he also managed to keep the sheet clean on his service. Darcis controlled the second set, as well, managing to steal two more service from the losing pace Austrian who was given no chance to build a break point chance.

Darcis won 72 percent of first serve points and 74 percent of service ones, converting at the same time four out of nine break points. Regarding Thiem’s showing, it featured a 48 first serve percentage, six aces, a double fault and a 26 return percentage.
