Sebastian Vettel has captured yet another pole position, his tenth of the season, when the German set the best time in the Monza qualifying. The world champion set a one minute and 22,275 second time and will have both McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button behind him on Sunday.
Hamilton, winner of the titles this season, was 0,450 seconds slower than the German who is chasing his eighth title of the season in Italy, while the latter one set a 0,502 second gap against the same favorite. Fernando Alonso will start the Sunday race on fourth position and will have Mark Webber behind him. The former world champion Spaniard, who spent 18 laps on track, was 0,566 seconds slower than Vettel, while German’s team mate, who has not won a title this season, set a 0,697 second gap.
Felipe Massa, who had provided the third best time in the last free practice, was the last to come under a second. Vitaly Petrov from Renault and Mercedes Michael Schumacher came 1,255 and 1,502 seconds slower than Vettel, being followed by Nico Rosberg who set a 2,202 second gap.
Bruno Senna will have the tenth position and team mate Paulo Di Resta behind him. Williams’ grabbed back to back positions with Rubens Barrichello departing from the 13th position and Pastor Maldonado on 14th. Sergio Perez set a 2,570 second gap and will start the race on 15th position with Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi behind him.
Finally, Kamui Kobayashi came 17th with a 2,790 second delay, while Jaime Alguersuari and Lotus’ Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen will start on last positions.
Defending champion Fernando Alonso will be trying to win his second straight title in Monza but also his second one of the season. The Spaniard has only won the British Grand Prix and claimed that he aims a podium position on Sunday’s race in Italy.
“I’m happy with the result as it gives us a good chance for the race, to fight for the podium, to be in the fight at the first corner if we get a good start. The weekend has been complicated, and we have never been fast enough. We have changed a lot of things in the car and so it’s been a weekend with a lot of work,” said the former world leader.
As for Vettel, the German, who has plenty of chances to defend his champion title, will chase his eighth success of the season, his last win coming from the Belgian Grand Prix. He has also grabbed four second positions and a third place in Germany.
