Madrid picked three easy points when Jose Mourinho’s side demolished newly promoted Rayo Vallecano 6-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu where Cristiano Ronaldo hit three past the visitors.
The game started with the underdogs chasing an early opener, which it finally came through Michu, following a superb action on the left developed by Raul Tamudo. The striker beat his marks but hit Casillas, whose poor save allowed Michu to convert the rebound home.
Newly transferred Raphael Varane got his first big chance of the meeting early in the fifth minute following a perfect cross from Angel Di Maria, which the striker headed just wide from inside the box. Four minutes later Real Madrid won their first free kick with Ronaldo taking the responsibility for it. The Portuguese struck it over the wall but straight at keeper Dani who made the save with ease.
Rayo Vallecano got their first dangerous opportunity in the tenth minute but an offside position stopped Bangura from putting Casillas under pressure. Four minutes later, Jose Ramon Sandoval’s side, who has been led to one win and two draws this season, were very close to providing an easily unexpected opener. Bangura beat his mark Marcelo to feed Tamudo on the edge of the box from where the forwarder hit it straight at Casillas who saved the ball at the death.
The 17th minute brought Di Maria the first yellow card for a tough challenge on Jordi. Ronaldo neared the leveler in the 21st minute but the Portuguese star failed to head Ramos’s cross home. Kaka then took advantage of a poor defending only to be denied by keeper Dani. Gonbzalo Higuain also missed a great opportunity one minute later, following an impressive action from Di Maria who picked his conational with a superb cross the striker failed to convert.
On the other side, Rayo were chasing their second one as the 26th minute saw the visiting side mock a golden occasion through Bangoura whose volley went just over the bar in what could have been a shocking first half for the hosts. Jose Mourinho made his first change pretty early, introducing Mesut Ozil for Lassana Diarra in the 30th minute.
Ozil tried his luck with a 20 yarder which Dani saved at the death in the 32n minute. Six minutes later Real broke through and evened the situation through Cristiano Ronaldo who beat the keeper with a powerful shot through his legs, following a great action directed by Kaka. With one minute left in the first half, Arribas conceded his firs yellow card for a foul on the same Brazilian.
Higuain gave his side the first lead seconds before the half time, following a cross from the left which Alonso delivered for Ramos. The defender headed it back to the Argentine who beat Dani from close range. The half time went 2-1 as Real had already been in control.
Rayo provided another strong start in the second term as the visitors neared the leveler in the 47th minute through Arribas who failed to contact a poor save from Casillas. Two minutes later Kaka earned Real a clear penalty. The Brazilian was taken down by Stonewall and Ronaldo placed the ball for the white spot kick. The Portuguese beat Dani into the top right corner to complete his double and score the sixth goal of the season.
Rayo broke back immediately as Arribas volleyed the ball into the side netting in what should have been a second one for the away side. The 55th minute saw the same Vallecano make it 2-3 through the same Michu who completed his double from close range. A couple of minutes later Di Maria picked up his second yellow card for a foul on Casado.
Mourinho then answered with a couple of changes introducing Sami Khedira and Karim Benzema for Higuain and Kaka. Bangoura was also shown a tallow card following a tough challenge on Marcelo. Alonso placed the ball for a direct free kick which he converted into the stands in the 66th minute. Despite playing in ten men, Real found the strength to make it 4-2 one minute later when Varane scored a superb goal following a corner from the right taken by Ozil.
Coach Ramon then introduced Dani Pacheco and Trashorras for Piti and scorer Michu respectively in what was a desperate move. Real scored even a fifth one in the 74th minute. Benzema was picked on the edge of the box to hit it home into the left hand far post. Ronaldo completed his hat trick in the 84th minute from penalty. Dani took down the Portuguese inside the box to convert the second white spot kick with ease.
Said Jose Mourinho after the game: “Kaka and Ozil played closer to the goal. We didn’t have a true number ’10′ on the pitch, but there were three excellent playmakers out there. We started pulling off more efforts. It’s a shame I had to replace Kaka when we were down to ten men because he was giving a very good performance.”
