Inter Milan have captured their first victory of the new season after beating ten man Bologna 3-1 away at the Dall’Ara stadium in what was Nerrazzuri’s first game under new coach Claudio Ranieri.
Inter opened the score in the first half but were leveled amid the second term. Milito and Lucio’s late goals earned the Giuseppe Meazza side the first win of the season. Pazzini was the first to near the opener in the fifth minute when Cambiasso picked him with a perfect cross the striker failed to convert home. Inter missed yet another big chance just one minute later through Lucio whose finish was blocked by Gillet, following a dangerous free kick taken by Forlan.
Bologna also mocked a golden chance in the tenth minute when Di Vaio beat the offside trap only to be denied by Julio Cesar. Forlan got his first chance in the 13th minute but his shot hit the bar in what should have been a first one for the visitors. Inter put more pressure as the game progressed. Coutinho was played in god position but his strike missed the target from the edge of the box.
The hosts won a free kick in the 37th minute which Kone placed well but which Cesar saved at the death. Just a couple of minutes later Inter got into the lead through Pazzini who beat Gillet following a superb pass from Cambiasso. Bologna failed to convert another free kick in the 44th minute as Lucio deflected the ball into the corner.
With one minute left in the first half Di Vaio was blocked by Samuel who saved his side from a potential danger. The half time went 1-1 as both sides were chasing more goals. Two minutes into the second part, Coutinho was stopped by the hosts’ defence. Cambiasso picked the rebound only to strike it straight at the keeper.
Meanwhile, Di Vaio was desperately chasing his first one. Cesar made a tremendous save in the 53rd minute, making the striker wait longer for a break through. Raneiri made the first change in the 54th minute when the new manager introduced Jonathan for Coutinho. Di Vaio also departed in the 64th minute with Acquafresca replacing him in front.
Bologna won a perfect placed free kick in the 66th minute which Cesar saved with some effort. Just two minutes later, the Pier Paolo Bisoli’s side leveled the score through Diamanti who converted a penalty which followed Samuel’s foul on Portanova. But Milito brought back the lead with nine minutes left in the game. The Argentine converted a penalty into the roof of the net to put his side minutes from the first season win.
For more safety, Lucio made it 3-1 in the 8th minute following a free kick on the left which the Brazilian headed home past the keeper. Inter picked their first three points of the term but remain 16th in Serie A table with four points won in four games. Bologna are second from the bottom with one point in four matches.
Said president Massimo Moratti after the game: “Inter are more rational in the sense that it’s more like their normal way of playing before. Gasperini might have been able to find that sort of normality further ahead but it was too much of a risk… We knew they (Milito and Pazzini) are great players; it’s not that they have to keep proving themselves. Milito looks to be in very good shape.”
Nerrazzuri will meet Napoli next Saturday at Giuseppe Meazza in what is expected to be the first real test for the former champions, while Bologna travel to Udinese next Sunday.
