Champions League group stage when the former champions defeated CSKA Moscow 3-2 yesterday at the Luzhniki stadium where the Italians scored their winner shortly after being leveled.
That was also Nerrazzuri’s first game in Champions League with Claudio Ranieri on the bench. Inter opened the score early in the game and doubled their advantage amid the first term. CSKA cut the first deficit with one minute left in the first half and evened the situation amid the second one. Zarate brought Inter the long awaited win to put his side second in the group B.
Inter scored the first goal in the sixth minute through Lucio who put the ball into the empty net following a corner on the right which the Russians cleared poorly as far as the Brazilian who made it 1-0 from the left angle. Obi missed a great chance in the 12th minute when Pazzini picked the midfielder with a perfect cross which he headed straight at keeper Gabulov who made the save at the death.
Julio Cesar hindered the hosts to score their first one in the 13th minute following Love’s insdie the box finish to which the vigilant Brazilian was equal. Milito got his first chance two minutes later following a great play on the left developed by Obi who picked the Argentine in good position only to volley it straight at the keeper.
The 16th minute saw the same visitors threaten with a second goal but Obil failed to contact the ball properly. Pazzini made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute following a great individual action from Nagatomo who beat his mark easily to penetrate the box and hit the keeper. Pazzini converted the close range follow up to draw the clear win in Russia.
Cesar provided yet another providential save in the 28th minute when the Brazilian denied Dzagoev’s close range shot. CSKA mocked a second golden opportunity just one minute later through Doumbia whose header hit the post to the dismay of coach Leonid Slutsky. Nagatomo’s crucial intervention hindered the hosts of scoring their first one in the 30th minute as CSKA were desperately their goal.
Zanetti tried his luck with a shot from 25 yards which missed the target. With two minutes left in the first half Moscow closed the gap to one goal thanks to Dzagoev who beat Cesar with a tremendous free kick from 20 yards or so. The midfielder thundered the ball over the wall and straight into the left hand corner to resuscitate his side.
The half time went 2-1 to the Italians who were still looking as favorites. Four minutes into the second part, CSKA got a huge chance to even the situation through Mamayev whose shot went just wide from distance. Claudio Ranieri made the first change in the 50th minute when the new coach introduced Zarate for Pazzini in what would prove to be an inspired move.
Dzagoev also tried his luck with a shot from distance which Cesar held with ease. Inter broke back immediately through newly introduced Zarate whose finish was blocked at the death by Gabulov. Gabulov came up with another intervention in the 65th minute as the defender denied Alvarez in front of the goal to give his side another chance to stay in the game.
Slutsky introduced Tosic for Pavel Mamayev in the 67th minute, while Obi conceded his first yellow card right afterwards, following a foul on Oliseh. Dzagoev thundered a dangerous shot across the face of the goal in the 69th minute but neither Doumbia, nor Love could convert it home.
The 74th minute brought the hosts the long awaited leveler through Love who beat two marks on the edge of the box before firing a powerful low shot in the near post and below Cesar. But Russians’ joy would not last too long as Inter scored the winner just a couple of minutes later.
Cambiasso fed Zarate just out side the box only to create a reasonable space and hit it home into the far post. Inter made another change in the 82nd minute when Alvarez made way for Jonathan. The game finished with Cambiasso’s yellow card and a third substitution for Ranieri who replaced Cristi Chivu with Lorenzo Crisetig in what seemed to be a time wasting move rather than a tactical one.
Said Inter new coach after the game: “It was great to see the lads wanting to win again and pushing forward as they know how to. We have a team full of top players and some more on the sidelines still to return, but let’s give credit to those who did well tonight – they were fantastic, all of them.”
