Detroit have extended their winning streak to three victories when the leaders beat Cleveland Indians 9-6 last night at the Comerica Park where the hosts kept the lead throughout the entire meeting.
Jackson brought the first lead for his side in the opening term after Young singled to center, while the same Young and Cabrera came up with a double right afterwards. Furthermore, Betemit hit a 435 foot homer in the second round as Detroit were drawing the clear win. The third inning went scoreless forb toh sides, while the fourth one saw Indians close the gap to three points through Thome who made it 1-4 after Duncan doubled to left.
The visiting side were unable to extend their momentum as Detroit replied with yet another double brought by Young, who hit a 359 foot homer, and Betemit who propelled Detroit five points atop. Cleveland could only cut deficits from then on. Marson scored the second point for the away side in the fifth term, but Martinez re-established the five point lead right afterwards.
Raburn then doubled to right allowing Santiago to score his first point of the night. Indians tried to make their loss more bearable with a fourth one brought by Thome and Chisenhall in the sixth round. Cabrera scored the last point for Detroit minutes later with a 377 foot homer as the victory had already become a matter of time for the hosts.
The seventh inning brought Indians a couple of meaningless points. Thome doubled to left and Santana made it 5-9, while Chisenhall singled to right for Phelps’ last point. The last two innings went scoreless as Tigers were celebrating their third straight win.
Said Indians’ manager Manny Acta: “That’s a team that is going into the playoffs in better shape than almost any other team. They’ve been playing great for more than a month — and they are playing hard for home-field advantage. You can’t get away with many mistakes against them right now.”
Detroit are top spot in the Central with a .584 record including 94 wins and 67 defeats, the victory over Cleveland being their sixth in the past ten games and 49th at home. On the other side, Indians are behind them with a .497 percentage featuring 80 wins and 81 defeats. The loss to Detroit was their third in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 44th on the road.
Los Angeles Angels 3 – 10 Texas Rangers
Texas have improved their winning run to five successes after thwarting Los Angeles yesterday at the Angel stadium of Anaheim where the visitors provided a couple of consistent rallies which secured them a big win. LA were the first to take the lead through Trout who scored the first point of the game after Abreu hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The second term went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw Rangers build a four points run. Kinsler opened the rally with a 380 foot homer, while Andrus brought the first lead for Texas after Young singled to right. Beltre then singled to left allowing Hamilton to build a two point lead, with Young getting to second.
Finally, Young ended the early momentum with a fourth one scored in the same third inning. Angeles cut the deficit to three points through Romine but that could only arouse Rangers’ next run. Hamilton hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Kinsler to make it 5-2. The fifth round brought the hosts three more points.
All Beltre, Napoli and Cruz hit three homers as Rangers were heading towards a clear win. The sixth one went blank for both teams, while the seventh round saw Napoli and Beltre come up with a double. Finally, Moore scored the last point of the meeting after Navarro grounded into double play.
Said Napoli after the win: “We feel comfortable playing anywhere, but to sleep in our own beds and have your normal routine feels great.” Rangers are first in the West with a .590 record including 95 wins and 66 defeats, the victory over Angels being their ninth in the past ten games and 43rd on the road.
As for Los Angeles, they have dropped to a .534 record this season, one which features 86 wins and 75 defeats,. The loss to the leaders was their third in a row, sixth in the past ten games and 35th at home.
Milwaukee Brewers 6 – 4 Pittsburgh Pirates
Brewers overcame two deficits yesterday at the Miller Park before sealing to a late win grabbed in the seventh term. The first term went scoreless for both sides, while the second one saw Pirates score the first point through Walker and following Pagnozzi’s singling.
Milwaukee broke back in the third round when both Fielder and Weeks hit a 441 and 443 foot homers respectively, giving their side a minimal advantage. The fourth round also went blank as Pirates were still struggling for a comeback. Ohlendorg singled to center and Cedeno evened the situation in the fifth term. Even more than that, Ohlendorf made it 3-2 right afterwards but Pittsburg still had to fight for the victory.
Fielder broke them with a 451 foot homer, while Braun brought back the lead for Milwaukee as just. Pirates evened the situation in the sixth inning when Walker scored after Presley walked, threatening with a tight end.
Brewers were given the win in the seventh inning through Fiedler, who hit a 366 foot homerun, and Braun who made it 6-4. Milwaukee are top with a .590 record including 95 wins and 66 defeats, the victory over Pirates being their seventh in the past ten games and 56th at home.
On the other side, Pittsburgh are fourth with a .491 percentage including 72 wins and 89 defeats. The loss to Milwaukee was their sixth in the past ten games and 44th on the road.
