Cincinnati quarter finals after eliminating this year’s French Open winner Li Na 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in exactly two hours to meet another main favorite Maria Sharapova.
Both the Aussie and the fifth seeded Li Na won three breaks of six tries, but it was the first one to clinch the victory. The two also won 64 percent of service points, 36 on return and hit three aces past each other in what was the most equilibrated meeting of the day. Stosur claimed the win despite providing a much worse first serve than her opponent. Li Na converted 67 percent of fist serve points, compared to the Aussie’s 61.
“Tennis is a funny game, because you can have a really good match-up against some players then terrible against others. In the past she has struggled on the return against me and the high-bouncing kicker. She tried to attack it more today – it came off sometimes, and not on others. That’s one of those things in my game that she doesn’t like,” said the winner after the clash.
HNext up for the tenth favorite is Maria Sharapova, winner of this year’s Rome Masters, who eased past Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. The former world champion, who is still looking for her old shape, broke the compatriot six times of eight tries, winning at the same time 60 percent of service points and 53 on return.
On the other side, Kuznetsova finished the game with two breaks, winning just 47 percent of service points and 40 of her opponent’s. Sharapova needed one hour and 21 minutes to secure the next term berth where she will meet Stosur for the ninth time. The Russian leads the head to head series with the world number ten 8-0, having last defeated the 27-year-old at this term’s Rome event. This will also be the third clash of the year after the two also met at the Miami Masters.
Second seed Vera Zvonareva has also progressed into the final eight round after easing past Petra Martic 6-2, 6-2, to meet Daniela Hantuchova in the next round. The Russian ousted the qualifier after both converting four out of four break point chances and saving all the four break points coming from the opposite side.
Vera won 70 percent of service points and 50 on return, compared to the Croatian who won just 50 percent of service points and 30 of return ones. Her next opponent Hantuchova, winner of the Pattaya City event this year, stunned eighth seed Marion Bartoli in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. The Slovak needed three hours to get rid of the French who allowed her to win seven of her services.
Hantuchova finished the game with a 61 service percentage, a 48 return one, while Bartoli’s showing included a 52 service percentage. She managed though to win five breaks but never got the chance to stay in touch with the win, losing the last set very easily.
Concerning the first half of the draw, Nadia Petrova crashed Caroline Wozniacki’s killer Christina McHale in two easy sets 6-3, 6-3 to set a tough meeting with Andrea Petkovic who follows a similar victory against Petra Kvitova. Petrova needed nearly one hour and a half to send the American packing, breaking her four times in nine tries.
The Russian won at the same time 67 percent of service points and 44 on return, while McHale could barely convert one of her six break point chances, winning just 33 percent of return points. Petrova also hit nine aces and conceded five from the opposite side.
Her next opponent Petkovic, winner of the Strasbourg event, needed one hour and 40 minutes to eliminate Kvitova whom the German broke four times. Petkovic set a 75 first serve percentage, winning 63 percent of service balls and 49 on return. On the other side, the Czech finished the game with seven double faults, including a 54 first serve percentage.
Shahar Peer and Shuai Peng are also expected to fight for a quarter final berth. The Israeli follows a straight set win against Pauline Parmentier of France whom she eased past 6-2, 6-3. Her next opponent Peng stunned Sara Errani 6-2, 6-4 but might have a much harder life against Peer. Whoever wins the next clash will next face either Jelena Jankovic or Francesca Schiavone.
Jankovic edged Jie Zheng in three sets after surviving an early scare, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The 13th favorite Serb needed more than two hours and a half to eliminate the Chinese who conceded six breaks from the seeder. Jankovic, who has not won a title this year, won 60 percent of service points and 49 on return, while Zheng could barely convert 51 percent of her serves, though she finished the game with an impressive 84 first serve percentage.
As for Schiavone, the seventh seed struggled against Maria Kirilenko whom the Italian defeated 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in nearly two hours and a half. Schiavone broke her opponent six times and created 14 break point chances, but also allowed her opponent to convert all her first break points, something which helped the Russian to level the score quite easily.
Unfortunately, Kirilenko failed to set the pace in the second set, losing the decider at the death and after conceding three more services. Schiavone will meet Jankovic for the sixth time, the head to head confrontations being led 3-2 by the 26-year-old who last defeated the Italian at this year’s French Open Slam.
