Chelsea have completed the signing of former Anderlecht striker Romelu Lukaku who received a five year deal from the Blues. The 18-year-old player is likely to play alongside Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres and could make his debut in the new jersey next weekend.
Romelu has become the third player to sign the former champions after another Belgian league player, former Genk keeper Thibaut Courtois and Oriol Romeu of Barcelona were given full times jobs at the Stamford Bridge. “It’s a dream come true. I dreamed to play here since I was 10 years old, thinking about shaking hands with all those players like Terry, Lampard and Drogba, it’s amazing to arrive here in a big club with big ambition. It was just what I was searching for,” said the youngster who was Belgian league’s top scorer in the 2009-10 season with 15 goals.
Andre Villas Boas is still looking for a playmaker to link the game better in the middle as Chelsea have already made a bid for both Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric and Valencia’s Mata. The Croatian is likely to sign the Stamford Bridge side despite Harry Redknapp’s denials, while the Spaniards rejected the English’s offer for their player.
Blues’ first signing Courtois has already been loaned to Atletico Madrid, while Romeu has not made his debut yet. Apart from this, Andre Villas Boas is currently facing some squad difficulties as keeper Petr Cech has just suffered a ligament injury and will be kept away from the pitch until next month. The Czech will be replaced by Henrique Hilario who is preferred by the Portuguese coach to Toss Turnbull.
Cech, who got injured during a training session, is thus expected to miss the games against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich and Sunderland. The Portuguese is also confronting with Nicolas Anelka’s uncertain future. The Frenchman is believed to have considered his leaving from London after Fernando Torres gained his place in the squad. Furthermore, Chelsea could lose both Yossi Benayoun and Salomon Kalou who might join Tottenham if the Modric transfer succeeds.
Chelsea started their new era with a scoreless draw against Stoke City whom Boas’ side drew last weekend away. Next up for them is West Brom whom they meet next Saturday. The Blues, who finished the past season second, will play their first derby on September 18 when they meet Manchester United at Old Trafford.
