The Middle East Quartet, composed of the United Nations, the United States of America, European Union and the Russian Federation, met on Monday in Washington, DC to discuss the situation between Israel and the Palestinians.
On Tuesday, the Russian minister of defense Sergei Lavrov brushed aside the doubts about a rift created between the members of the quartet concerning the way to approach the tense situation in the Middle East.
Lavrov met on Monday with Ban Ki-moon, the U.N. Secretary-General, Cathrine Ashley, EU foreign policy chief, and Hillary Clinton, U.S. State Secretary.
The rumors sparked over the fact that the four leaders, who met in order to lay down the framework for new talks, made no official statement.
Lavrov explained that because no statement was made after the meeting there is no cause to think that the work was abandoned, or that the effort was fruitless. He added that the experts are working on it.
Lavrov emphasized that the four partners of the quartet wanted the negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians resumed, and that they were hoping that when the common position was presented, it would reflect the specific demands by each of the parties.
Lavrov expressed hope thatthere would be time for other consultations until a solution can be found.
This meeting of the quartet could be the last one before the annual general assembly of the United Nations in September, when the Palestinians intend to proclaim unilaterally a state within the borders in 1967.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu took an European tour, on which occasion he pleaded for Israel’s position in the event such a proposition will come to vote in the U.N. general assembly.
Israel wishes to create a critical mass of democratic countries which would oppose the Palestinians and their supporters.
