All the storms and rains that have been hitting the United States the previous 2 months must have warned us that what came after was an incredible wave of extreme heat. The unbearable temperatures can create a lot of problems, especially to more sensitive people or to people who are already known to have a heart condition. Furthermore, for those who exercise a lot things can get even worse. That is why, some serious, extreme measures must be taken to protect people who work out a lot from the terrible heat that awaits for them outside.
First of all, all people, regardless of the age, should drink a lot of water. However, for people who work out a lot, it is recommended that they drank a large amount of water about 30 minutes before getting their practice started. Then, during the workout, they should drink at least 6 ounces of water every 20 minutes, in order to make sure they stay hydrated. Moreover, it seems that drinking water even after exercising is vital. Even if you feel that you are not thirsty anymore, continue drinking water and if your workout lasts for more than 60 minutes, make sure you replace your sports drink with a bottle of water, as it does you better.
Secondly, people who work out must adjust and accustom their bodies to the heat. This process takes about two weeks – two weeks in which your body will get accustomed and acclimatized with the environment and then, you will have no problem. Once this happen, your chances of getting dehydrated or having higher heart rates decrease. Furthermore, once you get accustomed to the heat, your body will start sweating more, resulting in a lower body core temperature.
Thirdly, you should learn when to slow down. What you have to do is lower the intensity level of your workout because that will reduce the strain on your body, improving your body’s ability to regulate the temperature. Then, if you work out a lot, you must know how to dress. The trick is not to wear waterproof clothes, because the fabrics out of which these types of clothes are made prevent the water from getting away from your body, increasing your rates of getting a heat injury. Lastly, you must be smart and try and cut back on exercises when you feel that the temperature has gone higher than 90 degrees Fahrenheit and when the humidity is about 60 percent, because that can do a lot of damage.
Anyways, being safe during the summer is not that difficult, but if you work out a lot make sure you take into account these suggestions, because they will keep you safe.
