Lewis Hamilton has captured his second title of the season after winning the German Grand Prix in Nurburg where the Briton set a one hour 37 minute and 30,334 second time. Fernando Alonso came second, while Mark Webber, who had come first in the qualifying, grabbed the third position.
Alonso started the race from fourth position, managing to overcome both Sebastian Vettel and Webber who keep though the Red Bull racing first in the team standings. The Spaniard was 3,980 second slower than the Briton, being followed by the Australian who still lacks a title this season who had a 9,788 second gap. The word champion Vettel had a poor start as the German failed to shine art home in Germany, being ninth at one point in the race.
After a long battle with Felipe Massa who kept the youngster behind him throughout the entire race, a late stop cost the Brazilian a few seconds, something which propelled Vettel fourth. That was also his only position out of the podium this year, being 47,921 seconds slower than the winner. Massa thus came fifth with a 52,252 second gap, being followed by Adrian Sutil who impressed on Sunday as Force India won eight precious points thanks to his performance. Sutil was the first to set an over a second gap and the last to come under one.
Nine drivers, including Mercedes Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, but also Sauber’s Kobayashi and Vitaly Petrov of Renault. Heikki Kovalainen of Lotus finished just 58 laps of 60, while Virgin’s Rimo Glock and d’Ambrosio as well as Hispania’s Ricciardo drove 57 laps. Finally, Chandhok of Lotus was four laps behind, the racing providing at the same time four abandons.
Jenson Button, winner of Canadian Grand Prix, abandoned the race after just 25 laps due to an hydraulic problem, while Liuzzi, Rubens Barrichello and Nick Heidfeld also pulled over due to small incidents.
Said Hamilton after the race: “Every win is special, but with the emotion, effort and all the energy the team put into the car and the effort they put in, it just couldn’t feel better. Coming into this weekend I said I would take it one race at a time. To win is massively positive for us, but there is a long way to go and it is about getting consistency.”
Despite the win, the Briton remains third in the world standings with 134 points, going just five points behind Mark Webber. Sebastian Vettel is top with 216 pints, the German GP bringing him 12 precious points which put him 77 points safe off his team-mate. The second place brought Fernando Alonso 18 points as he dropped one position to fourth with 130 points. Jenson Button is fifth with 109 points, being followed by Felipe Massa, who won ten points to make it 62 this season.
Mercedes have Nico Rosberg on the seventh position with 46 points, while Nick Heidfeld is just behind with 34. Vitaly Petrov and Michael Schumacher share the ninth position as both have won 32 points this year. Kamui Kobayashi is 11th with 27 and Adrian Sutil nine points behind the Japanese. Jaime Alguersuari has nine points, being followed by Sergio Perez and Sebastien Buemi with eight, each, Rubens Barrichello with four and Paul Di Resta with two.
Concerning the team rankings, Red Bull lead the table with 355 points, being followed by McLaren with 243 and Ferrari with 192. Mercedes remain fourth with 78 points, 12 more than Renault, while Sauber goes sixth with 35. Force India, Toro Rosso and Williams are the last to have won some points this year, while Virgin, Hispania and Lotus are scoreless.
The next race takes place in Hungary with the practice sessions on Friday and the race on July 31.
