Mark Webber has set the pace in Valencia after coming fastest in the first trianing. The Red Bull driver set a one-minute and 40,403 second-time, being followed by revelation Vitaly Petrov who drove 20 laps.
World champin and current leader Sebastian Vettel set a poor time, coming 2,538 seconds slower than his team-mate, something whcih has worried the Austrians. Petrov came 0,824 seconds slower than Webber, while foremr world champion Fernando Alonso, who is still chasing his first title of the year, came third with a 0,836 second-gap.
This term’s Chinese Grand Prix champion Lewis Hamilton came fourth, 1,107 seconds behind the Aussie and after driving 23 laps. His team-mate Jenson Button, winner of the Canadian Grand Prix, stayed 14 laps on Firday morning and came seventh, 1,523 seconds behind the leader. The Birton, who has shown some great shape over the past months, has declared McLaren are ready to put more pressure on Red Bull who are holding the hegemony today.
Said Button: „We have to keep putting them under pressure. They had their issues in the pit stop in Monaco a couple of times, putting the wrong tyres on the car, and then Sebastian running wide on the last lap of the race in Canada. So we have to keep doing that because if we don’t then they are invincible.” McLaren reached the second and third places of the podium in Barcelona and have also managed to grab plenty of podium positions this season.
Nick Heidfeld of Renault has also set a reasonable time, coming 1,177 second sbehind Webber and just 0,070 seconds behind Hamilton. Alonso’s team-mate Felipe Massa grabbed the sixth position with a 1,355 gap, while Adrian Sutil put Force Indian maong the best ten, setting a 1,552 gap. Finally, Mercedes had Nico Rosberg on the ninth and Michael Schumacher on 11th with a 1,640 and 1,867 second-gap respectively.
Finaly, Jaime Alguersuari came tenth with a 1,813 second-gap, while his Toro Rosso’s mate Ricciardo was the first to come beyond two seconds. Williams’s had a poor showing as Rubens Barrichello came 13th and his team-mate Paulo Maldonado has set a 2,438 gap. Kamui Kobayashi was very slow in the first free practice, the Japanese coming 2,798 behind Webber.
Hulkenberg of Force India came 18th, while Kovalainen was the second to set a 3+ second-gap. Finally, Virgin’s d’Ambrosio and Glock grabbed back-to-back positions with a 4,623 and a 4,818 second-gap. As expected, Hispania came the last through Liuzzi and Karthikeyan who spent 24 and 27 laps respectively on the track.
The second free practice is to take place this afternoon, the qualifying term is scheduled on Saturday, while the race starts on Sunday.
