Dirk Nowitzki left the court with 21 points, 11 rebounds, a MVP award and a few tears in his eyes as Mavericks have won their first big NBA championship in franchise history. Dallas silenced title favorite Miami Heat 105-95 last night at the American Airlines Arena in Game 6 of the finals.
Miami’s Big Trio, who scored 57 points last night, thus failed to shine in their first season together, so LeBron is to wait at least one more season for the reason why he has signed the Heat last summer. Nowitzki finished his 39-minute showing with 21 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and one assist. Jason Terry shined the brightest though, coming up with 27 points, three rebounds, two assists and a couple of steals, performance which pushed the Mavs from behind towards a huge success grabbed away of Dallas.
Starter Shawn Marion added 12 points and picked eight rebounds, including an assist and one steal, but missed six out of ten FGM throws. Tyson Chandler came up with five points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist, Jason Kidd had nine points, eight assists, four rebounds and eight assist. Finally, Jose Juan Barea performed 15 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Dallas’s bench scored 43 points together.
Apart from Terry’s 27 points, DeShawn Stevens, who had been involved in a fight at one point, scored nine points and made one steal, Ian Mahinmi brought four points, three rebounds and one steal, while Brian Cardinal, who played 12 minutes, came off the bench to score three points and deliver one pass. Coach Carlisle kept Corey Brewer, Brendan Haywood and Peja Stojakovic on the bench throughout the entire clash, not ‘allowing’ them to taste the sweet victory of the unique success.
Overall, Mavericks converted 11 out of 26 three-point throws and managed to pick 40 rebounds, ten of which offensive ones. Terry converted three of seven tries, Stevenson three of vie, Kidd two, and Nowitzki, Barea and Cardinal all had one. Dallas won the first quarter by five points, only to be left three behind within the second term.
The visitors thus started the second half with a 53-51 lead, but did allow the Heat to take the lead at times. Unfortunately, the Eastern side conceded the third term 21-28 as things were heading towards a potential disaster. Finally, the Mavericks edged the rivals 24-23 in the last quarter to hoist their first ever NBA title.
On the other side, Miami’s Big Three were unable to propel their side towards a decider as neither LeBron, nor Wade were in their greatest shapes. The first one had 21 points, six assists, four rebounds, one steal and one block, while the latter one came up with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two blocks and one assist. Finally, the final cornerstone Chris Bosh had 19 points, eight rebounds and one steal.
Mario Chalmers, who was preferred as starter last night, scored 18 points, delivered seven assists, picked three rebounds and made three steals. As for Joel Anthony, the central picked just three rebounds and played 11 minutes. As for their reserves, Miami’s bench added 29 points, 11 of which being brought by Udonis Haslem, who had also been involved in an early fight. He completed his 34-minute performance with nine rebounds.
Eddie House came off the bench to score nine points, pick three rebounds, deliver a pass and make one steal. Mike Miller, who played eight minutes, and Juwan Howard, who played seven, left scoreless. Mike Bibby, James Jones and Erick Dampier were refused to be introduced by coach Erik Spoelstra who kept them on the bench throughout the entire clash.
Miami converted just seven three-pointers out of 23 tries, three of them being added by House. LeBron and Chalmers scored a double, each, while Wade missed all his four throws. The hosts also picked 39 rebounds, nine of which offensive ones. Their free-throw percentage was also a pretty poor one, Miami converting 20 throws of 33 attempts.
Said Miami coach Erik Spoelstra: “It goes without saying. You’re never really prepared for a moment like this. … Neither team deserved this championship more than the other, but Dallas earned it.” On the other side, Nowitzki declared he still cannot believe his side have won the first NBA championsip. “I really still can’t believe it,” he said. “We worked so hard and so long for it. The team has had an unbelievable ride.”
Dallas finished the playoffs with 16 wins and five defeats, while Miami grabbed 14 victories and conceded seven.
