The Indonesian police anti terrorism squad, the Special Detachment 88 have arrested 19 people in connection with the book bombs in a number of locations in Jakarta. The Police Headquarters spokesperson, Inspector General Anton Bahrul Alam, Friday at Police Headquarters said they were captured simultaneously on Thursday, April 21, 2011.
Three of them were arrested in the Merduati village, Banda Aceh. Of the three men one of them is suspected to be the mastermind behind the book bombs while investigation is still ongoing to determine the other respective roles. Most of those 19 people are university graduates or undergraduates with average age of 30 years old.
When questioned whether these book bombs had any connection with the old terrorist network Anton says that it can be categorized as similar since they were both using the same platform.
Specifically with the bomb found in Serpong, Anton describes number evidence discovered. “There were 40 plastic of carbide, three detonators and timers discovered there. Then there were two duffel bags in which there is aluminum pipe for gas cylinder as well as a detonator and timer. With this, the (resulted) explosion can be very dangerous” said Anton.
Head of National Agency for Combating Terrorism, Ansyaad Mbai said that the book bombers book is in one network with perpetrator who planned to bomb pipelines, near Christ Cathedral, Serpong, Banten.
Ansyaad Mbai said, “The arrest was in connection with the book bombs but in the investigation development it was revealed that they were also are preparing to bomb the church to disrupt the celebration of religious days.”
Nine high-explosive bombs were placed in Telaga Gading Serpong, Cihuni Village, Tangerang District, not far from Christ Cathedral, Serpong. The bombs were found by the police on Thursday morning.
The weight of each package bomb ranging from 10 to 15 kilograms and were placed in several points near the gas pipeline owned by the National Gas Company (PGN), inside the sewage line. The bomb was suspected to be blown up this Friday, when Christians perform the Good Friday ritual.
After the discovery of the bombs, the Indonesian President through the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Djoko Suyanto immediately announce level one security alert to prepare for the threat of terror.
Meanwhile, former member of Jemaah Islamiyah, Nasir Abbas says Indonesia needs tougher terrorist laws to narrow down the movement of terrorist groups. He said, “If the government here complicates their motion, they can not do anything here and must find another place outside of Indonesia.”
